Susie S. Stalcup has been named Vanderbilt's new vice chancellor for development and alumni relations. She most recently was the chief fundraising officer for Columbia University Medical Center. At Vanderbilt she will work to complete the $1.75 billion Shape the Future campaign scheduled to conclude in 2010. She will oversee development and alumni activities throughout Vanderbilt, including the medical center and all schools and programs in the university. » Full Story

Fortune named vice chancellor for public affairsFortune named vice chancellor for public affairs

Beth Fortune, a former gubernatorial press secretary and political reporter, has been named Vanderbilt University's vice chancellor for public affairs, a position she has held on an interim basis for the past six months. Fortune joined Vanderbilt in September 2000 as associate vice chancellor for public affairs.

"Beth Fortune possesses an in-depth, comprehensive knowledge of Vanderbilt, as well as a thorough understanding of its culture, history and mission. She is a highly respected and vastly experienced professional in the fields of public affairs, politics and the media, as well as a well-regarded and widely recognized leader in higher education and in our local community," Chancellor Nicholas S. Zeppos said. "There were many outstanding candidates for this position, but with Beth's depth of experience combined with her passion for Vanderbilt, she was the clear choice."

As vice chancellor for public affairs, she leads the university's comprehensive communications, government and community initiatives and serves as the university's chief spokesperson. » Full Story

The Rev. James Lawson, Div'60, turned a ceremony to unveil his portrait into a call to work for justice and peace for the friends, colleagues and admirers who gathered to honor him in November. Lawson, briefly expelled from Vanderbilt as a divinity school student for his work helping to desegregate lunch counters in downtown Nashville, returned in 2006 to teach. Lawson was named the 2005 Distinguished Alumnus by the Vanderbilt Alumni Association. » Full Story
