PeabodyPeabody Ranks No. 2 Among Graduate Schools of Education
Vanderbilt University's Peabody College of education and human development is the second-ranked education school in the nation, according to the latest rankings of graduate and professional schools by U.S. News & World Report. In other rankings released on Friday, gains were made by Vanderbilt Law School and the research program at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. 

Vanderbilt’s Nichols-Chancellor Medal to Be Awarded to Bob Geldof
Musician and social activist Bob Geldof will receive Vanderbilt University's third Nichols-Chancellor's Medal and the cash prize of more than $100,000 on May 8, when he will address graduating seniors and their families. Geldof, who raised more than $120 million for famine relief in Africa with the Band Aid, Live Aid and Sport Aid events in the 1980s, is a winner of the Irish Peace Prize. He was the founder and lead singer of the rock band The Boomtown Rats and has since gone on to a solo recording career.

Vanderbilt Welcomes Chancellor Zeppos

Vanderbilt's eighth chancellor said, "Vanderbilt is my home, and I promise my hardest work," as he addressed the entire Vanderbilt community for the first time as chancellor. He also reflected about the journey of his family from Greece to America. Nicholas S. Zeppos, who held the interim post for seven months, bounded to the stage to speak to an overflow crowd at the Student Life Center at the March 10 event. About 1,500 members of the Vanderbilt community attended. Click here for video of the ceremony. 

Reunion Classes Have Their Own Web Pages, Videos and Blogs 

The classes celebrating Reunion '08 (class years ending in 3 and 8) now have their own Web pages—and many of the classes are blogging online about their Vanderbilt stories, memories and plans for Reunion Oct. 24-25.

Vanderbilt Alumnus Named to Senior Fundraising Post 

Randall W. Smith, a Vanderbilt graduate and major fundraiser for the school's Shape the Future comprehensive fundraising campaign, has been named an executive associate vice chancellor for Development and Alumni Relations. For the past five years as an associate vice chancellor, Smith worked with key staff and alumni volunteers to improve programs in Undergraduate Reunion, Alumni Relations and the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Smith, BA'84, MDiv'88, began working at his alma mater 12 years ago as Alumni Relations program coordinator.

Easter Seals Names Carell Nashvillian of the Year 

Monroe Carell Jr., BE'59, has given quite a bit to Nashville institutions over the years. Recently, he got something back. Carell, a prominent Nashville businessman and philanthropist, was named 2008 Nashvillian of the Year by Easter Seals Tennessee, a service provider for disabled and special needs patients. "Having this honor says that what I have done has been worthwhile," said Carell, 76. He is a member of the Vanderbilt Board of Trust and chairs Vanderbilt's Shape the Future campaign. He also led the campaign to build the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Young Vanderbilt Women’s Team Sees Bright Future 

THE TENNESSEAN--In the aftermath of Vanderbilt's season-ending 80-66 NCAA tournament loss to Maryland on Saturday night, Commodores women's basketball coach Melanie Balcomb wanted to make sure something else didn't get lost: one of the most satisfying seasons in her 14 years as a head coach. "They have come farther than any team I've ever coached," Balcomb said. Vanderbilt notched NCAA wins over Montana and West Virginia before falling to the No. 1 seeded Terps.

Baseball Tailgate Party to Benefit Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital
Plan to meet some current and former Vanderbilt football, basketball and baseball players at an April 26 baseball tailgate party. The hospitality area opens at 12:30 and the game with Kentucky begins at 2 p.m. Tickets are $100 and all proceeds benefit the Monroe Carell Jr. Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt.

Vanderbilt & You Programs Taking Place This Month
More than 35 cities will host Vanderbilt & You programs for admitted students and their families in April. These programs connect admitted students with some alumni and parents who can answer questions, share their Vanderbilt experiences, and help the students make an informed college decision. Vanderbilt representatives will also be attending these events to provide more insight about the university and life on campus.

Vanderbilt Optimizes its Web Site for iPhone 
Vanderbilt University has released a version of its homepage specially designed for the iPhone. Visitors can view the site by going to www.vanderbilt.edu on an iPhone or to www.vanderbilt.edu/iphone on a traditional Web browser.

Chancellor Zeppos and Deans Mark Founder's Day 
On Monday, March 17, Vanderbilt University Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos, Vanderbilt's deans and descendants of Bishop McTyeire gathered to celebrate the 135th anniversary of the university's founding. After a brief ceremony and wreath presentation at the statue of Cornelius Vanderbilt, wreaths were also placed at the campus gravesite of Bishop McTyeire and his wife, Amelia. The ceremony concluded with cake and coffee served in Kirkland Hall.

Vanderbilt to Commemorate 40th Anniversary of King's death 
Angela Davis, the Rev. James Lawson, Houston Baker, Richard King, Bob Moses and Ruth Turner Perot are among the scholars and civil rights activists participating in Vanderbilt University's "We Speak for Ourselves: A Poet, a Prophet and Voices for the 21st Century" conference on April 4, presented by Vanderbilt's Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. 

 

Nobel Laureates on Vanderbilt Campus
In the space of only five weeks, three Nobel Prize winning physicists are visiting the Vanderbilt campus and will provide local researchers with updates on the latest developments in fields ranging from cosmology to the behavior of atoms to science education. Carl E. Wieman from the University of British Columbia, who shared the 2001 Nobel prize in physics, will give a free public lecture on the future of science education. His talk is scheduled for Monday, April 7, at 3 p.m. in Stevenson Center room 4327. 

Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Vaults into NIH Funding Top 10
Vanderbilt has reached a milestone in funding from the National Institutes of Health—the School of Medicine is now ranked No. 10 among U.S. medical schools for NIH funding in fiscal year 2007. While many of last year's top-ranked medical schools experienced flat or even decreasing funding, Vanderbilt's grant funding increased from $245.6 million to $282.3 million.

Peabody's John Braxton Named Editor of Top Higher Education Journal 
Vanderbilt Peabody College's John M. Braxton has been appointed editor of the Journal of College Student Development. The journal is one of the leaders in the field of higher education research. Braxton's five-year term as the journal's editor will begin August 1, 2008.

No One Laughs at Vanderbilt Now 
SPORTS BUSINESS JOURNAL--Five years after Vanderbilt eliminated the position of athletic director and folded its athletics department into the student life program, its teams' successes have defied predictions of doom and disaster. Baseball coach Tim Corbin, Vice Chancellor David Williams, former Women's Golf Coach Martha Richards, Board of Trust member John Ingram and former Chancellor Gordon Gee are quoted.

Foster Named All-American, SEC Player of the Year 
Senior wing Shan Foster was named first team All-American by Rivals.com and Scout.com and second team All-American by the Associated Press, Collegehoops.net, the Sporting News, and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.  Foster was the consensus SEC Player of the Year. He was also named as a first team All-Region selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Freshman A.J. Ogilvy was named to the All-SEC Second Team and was a unanimous selection to the league's All-Freshman team.

Foster's 42 Wows Vanderbilt Family at Senior Night
Shan Foster had a Senior Night that few Vanderbilt fans will ever forget. The Commodores' all-time leading scorer posted a career-high 42 point, the final three coming with 2.7 seconds remaining in overtime of an 86-85 win over Mississippi State. Click here for another story.
