Information for Greek Students

Collegiate Greek communities get blamed for high risk drinking and its consequences and, unfortunately, the reputation is well deserved. Statistics from Vanderbilt and from all over the U.S. indicate that the Greeks drink more and more often than other students. However, what is not always said is that the Greek community has many venues to combat this behavior, more so than other student populations.

According to the 2002-2003 Vanderbilt University Greek Life Annual Report, Panhellenic and IFC chapter presidents and executive boards worked together to produce the first conjoint alcohol policy. This was in response to several alcohol poisonings and accidents this past spring. Students created this policy after much research and debate. This fall, the implementation and enforcement of this policy will be student driven.

Officers! Be Pro-active! Educate to Prevent Trouble!

Sure, your chapter is required to go to the mandatory GAMMA presentations each semester, but your chapter may need something more . . . the Office of Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Prevention can develop a presentation that meets your chapter's needs. An officer can meet with the director to discuss the issues in a confidential setting. Greek Life encourages and supports confidentiality for these purposes. Call 343-4740 to schedule a meeting.

Party Management Training

As per the new IFC/Panhellenic Alcohol Policy, every executive board is required to participate in party management training by October 15, 2003. See our web screen with the scheduled training sessions.

GAMMA (Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol)

Mission Statement

GAMMA has provided a voice for the Greek community on the Vanderbilt campus, providing proposals for alcohol policy change, in discussions about alcohol with administrators, and helping to build on the strengths of the Greek community in reducing consequences of high risk drinking.

Every IFC and Panhellenic Council organization is required to have a GAMMA representative at each GAMMA meeting and event. We welcome representatives from the National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations but we recognize the limited number of members in those organizations may render this impossible. Representatives are asked to dedicate one year to development of GAMMA's goals and a fuller understanding of the issues of alcohol in the Greek Community. We welcome any volunteer who is interested in the goals and objectives of GAMMA.

GAMMA activities include:

  • The Great Pepsi Challenge (Date Rape Drug Awareness)
  • Co-sponsoring national speakers, "Support the Non-Drinker Week", Safe Spring Break Week, Mardi Gras Safety Week
  • Educational Swap (peer education)
  • DUI: Your Rights and Responsibilities
  • Designated Driver Program: Glow in the Dark Cups at local hot spots
