Be Real, Be Respectful!

"This above all, to thine own self be true" - Hamlet

At the sound of my seven-thirty alarm I awoke with a feeling of surprise! Once again, the bustling days of college summon me from my summer dream-like state.

After a quick shower, I pack three thousand books into my small book bag and head off into the morning sunlight. I am ready!

Often, during these brisk morning walks to class, I am reminded of a familiar Roman phrase: weni, widi, wici, or in the language of the ancient college student: I spent money, I went to class, I learned about life. With respect to the Romans, I would like to add two more phrases to this Ceaseresque philosophy . . . I was myself and I respected others along the way.

One problem on college campuses across the U.S. is excessive underage and binge drinking. Both are a result of unvoiced social pressures which every student feels. Both often go against the philosophies of being independent and respecting others. As a freshman, I often felt that, to be a part of the group, I needed to drink. I soon realized that the quality of my character and my morals were more important then "fitting in". Alcohol is not evil, but it can put a lot of social pressure on those who don't drink . . . especially in college. The important thing is to be yourself. If you don't drink then don't let pressures of others influence you to be someone other than yourself! Be real!

As a community we must remember to honor the wishes of others, especially those who are different from us. If a student feels uncomfortable drinking, that shouldn't be an excuse to exclude them. At Vanderbilt, we must remember the golden rule. Be respectful!

By using the issue of alcohol as an example of individuality and respect, one can understand that Vanderbilt, as a campus, needs to change. So, the next time you find yourself on the early morning run to class remember that Vanderbilt is a community and you are a part of it. Don't forget to conquer the day, however remember to be yourself and respect others along the way!
