The mission of the Office of Financial Affairs is to provide and promote the highest standards of accounting and financial reporting services to meet the business needs of the students, faculty, staff, and service providers of the University in a pleasant, professional, and efficient manner.
The vision for the Office of Financial Affairs is threefold:
- To ADD STRATEGIC VALUE through relevant, timely, strategic, and concise financial reports and analyses for Vanderbilt's executive leadership and the Board of Trust;
- To IMPROVE EFFICIENCY through the planning and implementation of systems to assist end-users in the processing of transactions and access to meaningful and useful financial data and information; and
- To IMPACT THE BOTTOM LINE and maximize University resources available for faculty and student programs through financial decision support, consequential budgetary processes, and internal control oversight.
The Office of Financial Affairs serves the institution by processing and initiating transactions, generating financial reports, and supporting strategic university-wide financial planning. Some responsibilities, as noted below, are shared with the Medical Center Department of Finance. The Office of Financial Affairs also works closely with the Office of Investments on issues such as cash management, banking accounts, and capital debt management.
The Office of Financial Affairs provides the following services:
- Prepares internal consolidated financial reports including quarterly reports for the Board of Trust. Note: The Medical Center Department of Finance produces a separate monthly report presented to the Medical Center Board.
- Prepares external consolidated financial reports and coordinates the external audit (KPMG) of the consolidated financial statements. Note: The Medical Center Department of Finance produces separately audited financial statements for the Hospital and Clinic.
- Maintains the General Ledger for over 40,000 responsibility cost centers and 3,000 revenue/expense accounts
- Oversees consolidated budgeting and financial planning
- Consults the Integrated Financial Planning Council
- Complies with tax and regulatory reporting requirements
- Performs capital and debt management
- Completes economic impact studies and external financial surveys
- Facilitates University-wide financial systems planning
