Faculty Checklist of Recommended Practices:

  • Put a statement of the application of the Honor Code on your syllabus.
    • Sample syllabus statements:
      • “Vanderbilt’s Honor Code governs all work in this course (e.g., tests, papers, and homework assignments).”
      • “All academic work at Vanderbilt is done under the Honor System.”
    • Also provide helpful details for your course:
      • Detail permissible and impermissible behaviors:
        • Students may collaborate on homework, but not . . .
        • Rough drafts must include proper citations . . .
        • You are permitted and encouraged to discuss the answers to the suggested problems with other students, TAs, and faculty . . .
    • Set your own expectations for academic propriety.
  • Introduce your policy – particularly for grey areas, such as group work – on the first day of class.
  • Remind students of your policy in week two of the course and around midterms.
  • Build parameters and expectations into assignments for graded work.
  • Require that students sign the Honor Pledge on all graded work (“I pledge on my honor that I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid on this assignment.”).
  • Maintain an open door policy and encourage students to ask questions about expectations for assignments, citation preferences, and group work.
