Violence Prevention and Intervention

Project Safe, in the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center, offers resources and referrals for support to anyone within the Vanderbilt community affected by power-based personal violence, including stalking, sexual, and relationship violence. Rooted in the Margaret Cuninggim Women’s Center, in the Office of the Dean of Students, Project Safe serves individuals of all identities. Victim Services, in the Vanderbilt University Police Department is a professional law enforcement agency dedicated to the protection and security of Vanderbilt University and its diverse community. The Office of Victim Intervention and Education offers free and confidential services for victims of crime on the Vanderbilt campus. The victim services coordinator is available 24/7 to provide support, including acting as a liaison between the victim of a crime and any legal, medical, and/or counseling services which may be needed to address the needs of the victim (court hearings, the filing of protection orders, law enforcement interviews, the composition of one’s Victim Impact Statement, line-ups, depositions, etc.).

Psychological and Counseling Center (PCC) provides ongoing therapeutic support to members of the Vanderbilt community who are survivors or loved ones of survivors of power-based personal violence.

The Student Health Center provides medical assistance to survivors of power-based personal violence, including the coverage of emergency contraception, STI testing, and the medical fees associated with the medical-legal exam, or rape kit, when administered at the Vanderbilt Emergency Department.

Office of Student Conduct and Academic Integrity works with students to uphold the Sexual Misconduct Policy and assists with distributing Directives to Desist when necessary.

Tennessee Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence is a private nonprofit organization composed of diverse community leaders and program members who share a common vision of ending violence in the lives of Tennesseans through public policy, advocacy, education and activities that increase the capacity of programs and communities to address violence.

Since 1978, the Sexual Assault Center has provided sexual assault services for adults, children, and families in the Middle Tennessee area. They offer a holistic approach, working with the entire family, offering individual and group therapy sessions.

YWCA of Nashville and Middle Tennessee provides services to help families leave abusive households and start new lives. They provide free GED® education to men and women and mentor middle school girls in some of Nashville’s toughest neighborhoods. The YWCA exists to educate, encourage and break down those barriers that perpetuate racism, violence and hopelessness. The YWCA maintains a confidential women’s shelter.

The Mary Parrish Center provides a nurturing and safe environment where the needs of domestic/sexual violence victims are met from one location. MPC can provide assistance with petitions for Orders of Protection, pro bono legal representation, court accompaniment, personalized safety planning, emergency shelter/transitional housing, food and clothing, case management, job placement, and counseling.

Oasis Center works to help young people overcome serious challenges that prevent them from transitioning into a healthy adulthood.
