Mission
Statement
The
Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center advances equity at Vanderbilt,
and in the larger community, through advocacy, education, and empowerment. We promote
the creation of an equitable environment to enhance the personal and professional development of students, faculty, and staff.
In
fulfilling our mission, we:
Create
a space for the community of women to gather, nurture, and support
one another.
Increase
awareness of the impact of the social construction of gender on
the lives of women and men.
Invite
women and men to engage in meaningful dialogue and to model equitable
relationship patterns.
Advocate
for inclusive policies and procedures throughout the university.
Celebrate
women's achievements.
Develop
and present programs that provide scholarly research about women
and women's issues, enhance women's practical skills, and foster
women's creative expression.
Provide
the information and tools needed to empower women to take action
on their own behalf.
Provide
the information and tools needed to empower men to be allies for
women.
Collaborate
with campus and community groups in advancing the equality of women.
Include
the input, needs and interests of women of all racial and ethnic
groups, ages, sexual orientations, abilities, and spiritual traditions.
Our
programs and services are open to students, faculty and staff, as
well as interested members of the local community. Because Gender
Matters, we invite you to Get Informed,
Get Connected, Get
Active, and Celebrate Women!"

In
the Fall of 2003, the Center celebrated the 25th Anniversary of
its founding in 1978. It is named in honor of Margaret
Margaret Cuninggim, who was the last person to serve as Dean of
Women at Vanderbilt and the first woman to serve as Dean of Student
Services. An articulate proponent of equality of the sexes, Dean
Cuninggim encouraged undergraduate women to envision their futures
as productive participants in every occupation.
