Rhythm and Roots

Vanderbilt University Student Dance and Drama Troupe

Rhythm & Roots Performance Company functions as a student group under the direction of Cindy Young within the Office of the Dean of Students. The organization performs numerous times a year, both on campus and in the community. In 2003, Rhythm & Roots took their show on the road when they traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to perform at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts.

Rhythm & Roots is an ensemble of talented students dedicated to exploring the use of performance art as an expression of social change. Founded in the fall of 1994, Rhythm & Roots creates its own powerful artistic works that celebrate the struggle, transformation, and survival of the human spirit.

The company's aesthtic is formed through a creative process combining the history, culture, and spiritual traditions of African-Americans and our African brothers and sisters with contemporary dance and music. Each voice, each musical note, each precise movement of the body represents the liberty and freedom that can only be expressed as art. The dance, music and energy of the students draw us closer to understanding ourselves and the world around us.
