For students in grades 5 -12
In honor of Black History Month, Vanderbilt Virtual School focuses on the history, political lives, music, and cultural contributions of African Americans to encourage students to explore the history of African Americans, learn about their struggles, and celebrate their successes. Established as Negro History Week in the 1920's by Carter G. Woodson, February was chosen for the celebration because Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln were both born in this month. Extended to a month-long celebration in 1976, Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans.
Come along and trace the journey to freedom and learn about some of the heroes from slavery who paved the way. Step back in time before the mid-1950's in the United States when black and white meant segregation. Discover stories of African Americans in Politics such as Shirley Chisholm, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, and Barack Obama. Experience music, dance, and drama by a high energy dance and drama troupe dedicated to exploring the use of the performing arts as an expression of social complexities and as a catalyst for social change. |

How do we honor the goal of “never forget” and encourage students to remember the Holocaust when these students may have little or no knowledge of World War II? The Virtual School’s answer is to focus on the survival of refugees from the Holocaust. “Witnesses and Voices of the Holocaust” offers firsthand accounts from survivors of all kinds. . . . those who lived through the war in hiding, in ghettos, in camps, by escaping, or in active resistance to Nazi rule. This videoconference focuses on these Holocaust survivors who found their way through unimaginable hardship and suffering to find new lives of purpose and dignity.
Come share their stories of triumph over adversity. These videoconferences will celebrate the courage of the survivors and spotlight the Holocaust as the pre-eminent modern example of the fruits of hatred, intolerance, ignorance and mass manipulation. "WITNESSES AND VOICES of the HOLOCAUST" will have a lasting impact on everyone who participates.
