BlackHistory

For students in grades 5 -12

In honor of Black History Month, Vanderbilt Virtual School focuses on the history, political lives, music, and cultural contributions of African Americans to encourage students to explore the history of African Americans, learn about their struggles, and celebrate their successes. Established as Negro History Week in the 1920's by Carter G. Woodson, February was chosen for the celebration because Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln were both born in this month. Extended to a month-long celebration in 1976, Black History Month is an opportunity to emphasize the history and achievements of African Americans.

Come along and trace the journey to freedom and learn about some of the heroes from slavery who paved the way. Step back in time before the mid-1950's in the United States when black and white meant segregation. Discover stories of African Americans in Politics such as Shirley Chisholm, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice, and Barack Obama. Experience music, dance, and drama by a high energy dance and drama troupe dedicated to exploring the use of the performing arts as an expression of social complexities and as a catalyst for social change.

Holocaust

For students in grades 5 -12

"WITNESSES AND VOICES of the HOLOCAUST" are videoconferences presented by aging,  eye-witness Holocaust survivors.  Eleven million people were killed in the Nazi Holocaust including 6 million Jews, and these presenters survived to live on and tell the stories.  Old photographs shared by these Holocaust survivors suggest distant memories that bring the reality of the Holocaust into sharp focus.  Subtle yet powerful, historical and personal, these videoconferences will employ emotional and powerful words and images strung together to weave stories of triumph over adversity.

These six presenters will challenge students NOT to forget the lessons from the Holocaust.  The stated goal is never to forget, but the question remains of how to remember the Holocaust for students who may have little or no knowledge of World War II.  The Virtual School’s answer is to focus on the survival of refugees from the Holocaust.

“Witnesses and Voices of the Holocaust” offers firsthand accounts from survivors of all kinds. . . . those who lived through the war in hiding, in ghettos, in camps, by escaping, or in active resistance to Nazi rule.  This videoconference shows how many Holocaust survivors found their way through unimaginable hardship and suffering to find new lives of purpose and dignity.

These videoconferences will celebrate the courage of the survivors and spotlight the Holocaust as the pre-eminent modern example of the fruits of hatred, intolerance, ignorance and mass manipulation.  "WITNESSES AND VOICES of the HOLOCAUST" will have a lasting impact on everyone who participates.

Career ConversationsFor students in grades 7 -12

In CAREER CONVERSATIONS video conferences, students will meet with experienced professionals who are active in their respected fields to discuss various career paths; what it is like to work in their particular careers; and the rewards, the stresses, and the challenges to overcome.  Presenters will then answer questions posed by middle school and high school students.

Presenters will address:

  • prerequisites for a specific career

RACE FOR THE PRESIDENCY

2008

For students in grades 5 -12

As soon-to-be presidential nominees from the two major political parties crisscross the country in a quest for the votes, this is an important journey on the road to the White House and a "teachable moment" that should not be missed.  Use these videoconference lessons to inform and engage your students in the election process.

The right to vote is one of the most important rights of citizenship in a democratic country, yet a substantial number of U.S. citizens choose not to exercise that right.  In “Race For the Presidency” videoconferences, teachers will have a unique opportunity to teach about elections and the election process, current issues, the importance of making informed decisions, and the importance of voting.

As the grueling presidential election process continues, Election Day seems a long way away, but before long,  voters will be lining up at the polls to cast their ballots in the next presidential election.  Capitalize on these "teachable moments" with this videoconference series that will teach about the process and engage students in learning about it.
