Brain Bee 2004!

Announcing the Winner....

Jingyuan Wu of Oak Ridge High School is this year's winner of the Brain Bee. Jingyuan scored an all time high score of 97! Congratulations to Jingwuan. Second place goes to Chloe Jiang of White Station High School.

High school students across Tennessee are invited to participate in a Brain Bee Competition. This event is being sponsored by Vanderbilt University as part of the Vanderbilt Brain Institute's Brain Awareness celebration, which goes on throughout March, 2004. For more information about Brain Awareness programs, click here or contact Dr. Andrea Baruchin of the Vanderbilt Brain Institute, (615) 936-2637. The Brain Bee is a great opportunity to learn about the brain, have fun, and win prizes and the honor of being the high school student who knows the most about the brain in the State of Tennessee!  The winner in Tennessee will be eligible to compete in the International Brain Bee at the University Of Maryland Medical School in Baltimore on March 19-21, 2004 (Friday through Sunday). The International Brain Bee also includes a practical neuroanatomy exam. Click here to see more links about Neuroscience

Here's how to enter the Tennessee Brain Bee...

Teachers:

1.  Click here to register for the Brain Bee

If you teach high school in Tennessee, follow the instructions on this page and complete the form to sign your students up for the Brain Bee.  If you prefer to register by phone, call Chandra Allison at the Vanderbilt Virtual School 615-322-6511.  Registration deadline is February 3, 2004 at noon.

Brain FactsStudents:

2. Read the books:

1.  Brain Facts
For more information on the National Brain Bee, visit the sponsoring organization, The Society for Neuroscience.

For other interesting readings about the brain, visit the DANA.ORG site.

Brain Facts will be online until the Brain Bee.

The questions for this year's test will come from only the Brain Facts book. If you are unable to download the web versions, we will make copies and mail them to you. If your school wishes to pick up a copy of the "Brain Facts" book at Vanderbilt it is available at the Virtual School office located at 2007 Terrace Place.  Call Chandra Allison at 615-343-8848.

If you want to explore the brain further here's another great resource:  The Dana Sourcebook of Brain Science

3. Take the Brain Quiz

This is a multiple choice quiz just like the brain bee.  It will give you your score and show the correct answers at the end, however in the real Brain Bee it will record your score and you will be notified later of the results.  You will not be shown the correct answers after the real brain bee.   More importantly, this will also give you the opportunity to test your network connections and make sure that you're not going to have trouble connecting to the test location on Brain Bee Day. Questions about network connections should be addressed to your school's computer technicians.

4. To Take the Brain Bee exam click here on February 10 between 6 am and 10 pm CST. This can be done at school or at home.

On Tuesday, February 10, 2004, students whose teachers have registered to participate in the Brain Bee will click the "Take the Brain Bee" link above and answer as many of the questions on the brain as they can.  Students will have one hour to complete the exam. The site will be open from 6 AM to 10 PM CST and will set an on-line timer when the student logs in. This is NOT an open-book test.  Students may not consult any notes or other persons while taking the test.

5. Prizes

The responses will be graded and the winner of the Brain Bee will be notified through their teacher by the end of February. All participants will receive a Certificate of Accomplishment in the 2004 Brain Bee. All decisions by the judges will be final. The Grand Prize Winner in Tennessee will be eligible to compete in the International Brain Bee on March 19-21, 2004.  The Grand Prize winner will be invited to Vanderbilt to meet with neuroscientists and receive their awards. The Grand Prize Winner will also receive a Brain Bee Plaque to be displayed at the winning school.
