At the beginning of my junior year, I was looking for an activity that would give me hands-on work to supplement my classroom learning. Predictably enough, my obsession with aeronautics and aviation led me to the aerospace club and USLI competition. Under the tutelage of founder Will Runge, I learned what sleepless nights and hundreds of hours of work can accomplish. Here's to another year of heavily-caffeinated deadline racing.
Jimmy Board James Board, Vice President

Class: 2010 (Senior)
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Minor: Engineering Management
Hometown: Bowling Green, KY

Certifications: Level 2 High Power Rocketry - National Association of Rocketry

I joined the Aerospace Club because I am very interested in the fabrication and design of airplanes. I found the senior design projects from pervious years to be very interesting, so I joined immediately when given the opportunity. This club has also been the means by which I discovered my passion for rocketry.

Other Activities: Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity (Fraternal Education Officer, Secretary)
Ben Chociej Ben Chociej, Webmaster

Class: 2011 (Junior)
Majors: Computer Engineering, Math
Hometown: Kansas City, MO

Certifications: Level 2 High Power Rocketry - Tripoli Rocketry Association, Student Pilot - Airplane Single Engine Land

As a Computer Engineering major, there are plenty of fields I could go into after graduation. But aerospace is easily the most fascinating to me. For a couple of years now, I've known that I'd like to go into aerospace electronics, or perhaps even pursue a job as a pilot for a while. But whatever happens, I won't be living in a cubicle!

Other Activities: "Spirit of Gold" Marching Band (Section Leader, Drill Instructor), College Libertarians (Vice President), Resident Adviser, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity, Tau Beta Sigma Honorary Service Organization
Kyle Rosenstein Kyle Rosenstein

Class: 2010 (Senior)
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Hometown: Lexington, KY

I chose to join VU Aerospace Club to put to practice engineering class work that I have been learning strictly in a classroom setting. The VU Aerospace Club is a great example of where direct engineering goes into a final product. The aerospace field does not allow styling and personal taste to dictate design; it is a strict one-to-one correlation between theory and design. I think it is a great challenge and opportunity to improve on my engineering skills and set a strong foundation for my future work.

Other Activities: Vanderbilt Club Tennis, Pi Tau Sigma (Vice President)
Travis Chan Travis Chan

Class: 2010 (Senior)
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Hometown: Chattanooga, TN

I have always been interested in aviation, and I want to go into the aerospace industry for my career. When I first heard of the Aerospace Club, I could not join due to other commitments. I finally joined when presented the opportunity during my junior year.

Other Activities: Fencing Club (President)

Nick Vass Nick Vass

Class: 2010 (Senior)
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Minor: Materials Science
Hometown: Glenview, IL

I've always been interested in rocketry and airplanes, but after taking several ME courses such as Fluid Mechanics and Thermodynamics I've realized that this is what I really want to do. I am excited to be part of the VU Aerospace Club and plan on channeling that enthusiasm towards hard work on this project.

Other Activities: Vanderbilt Student Government, Youth Encouragement Services, Vanderbilt Student Volunteers for Science
VU Aerospace Sam McKnight

Class: 2010 (Senior)
Major: Mechanical Engineering
Hometown: Chicago, IL

Approaching my senior year, I wanted to have something meaningful for my college career to look back on. The senior design project is a wonderful opportunity for just that. Unlike many senior design projects, the USLI will be challenging and require hard work, but it will provide me a chance to learn more about all aspects of the design process in engineering. My internship the past two summers was certainly on the dry side of mechanical engineering. This project will give me the necessary experience to understand the other side of my field and help me in my career direction after college.

In high school I participated in the Team America Rocketry Challenge as well as the NASA Student Launch Initiative. The skills and knowledge I gained from these experiences gave me the desire to continue along a related path. When I heard about the Vanderbilt Aerospace club I thought it would be the perfect opportunity.
