Tutoring African Refugees in the Nashville Area

Advisor: Patrick Murphy

Senior Lecturer

Spanish and Portuguese Department

Imagine walking into a classroom in Bujumbura, the capital city of Burundi, a small country nestled in the heart of Africa, and as you sit down, the teacher begins lecturing in Kirundi, which you can barely understand. Furthermore, the lecture is on linear algebra, which you know nothing of, and as your haughty classmates eye you, your inclination is to run out the door. This is the plight of many of the children of Burundi refugees, and our goal for this Mayfield project is to work together to tutor and mentor these children with African Leadership Refugee Ministry.
