Changing Lives, Creating Futures

Advisor: Larry Dowdy, Department of Engineering/Computer Science

Project Description:

In this Mayfield Project, we work with at-risk high school youth at Maplewood High School in cooperation with a Vanderbilt graduate working with Teach for America. During the first year of our program, we focused on tutoring students and improving their grades. In some cases, students improved from failing grades to A’s and B’s in courses that we focused on. Additionally, we provided personal mentoring to students that we worked with when needed.

This year, our aim is to build upon the successes of last year’s program by expanding the focus to include mentoring for what will come after high school, whether that be college, technical school, or preparing for entry into the job market. In addition to subject area tutoring, we will also work with students on SAT/ACT preparation, college and financial aid applications, and work to arrange local college visits, while also inviting speakers from various career fields of interest to the students.
