Access and Security

The Office of Housing and Residential Education (OHARE) takes seriously our responsibility to provide secure campus housing. Working with the Vanderbilt University Police Department, OHARE takes a multi-layered approach to security in our residence halls.

Access to residence halls and residential floors is controlled with a key card access system. The access system restricts access to only those persons authorized to enter the residence halls and residential floors. Authorized persons are resident students, their guests and necessary personnel, including OHARE staff, Vanderbilt University Police Department, and university and contracted maintenance staff. In all 28 residence halls, access is controlled at all building entrances and - where architecture allows - at all stairway and elevator entrances to all residential floors.

Student access is limited to their own residence halls, their residential floors, and the floors of other residents of the same sex (except for coed floors). From 12:00 P.M. to 12:00 A.M., residents of both sexes have card access to each other’s floors. Some residence halls allow all students access to shared communal areas, classrooms and seminar rooms, and dining outlets.

OHARE has deployed a robust video surveillance system throughout the residence hall system. At present, are more than 1,200 cameras in our residence halls. These cameras cover all entrances, stairways, elevators, and most communal areas. Camera views are not live monitored but all images are recorded for review when required. All reviews must have prior approval from designated university officials.

Vanderbilt University Police Department patrols around residence halls and responds to emergencies in the residence halls. The department also provides timely security notices, crime statistics, a daily crime log, and an Annual Security Report as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act and the Tennessee College and University Security Information Act.
