Front Desk Assistant


The Office of Housing and Residential Education (OHARE) currently employs over 100 students in the Front Desk Assistant Program. There are six residential area desks throughout the university’s residential system that are staffed by professional Receptionists and AlliedBarton Security from 8am-4pm Monday through Friday. Each area desk is staffed by Vanderbilt students from 4pm-12am or 8am Monday through Friday and 8am-12am or 8am as indicated.

The purpose of these desks is:

  1. To provide customer service
  2. To observe and report any concerning activity
  3. To provide services to university, visitors, guests, residents, students, faculty and staff,
  4. To create a collegiate and friendly atmosphere throughout the residential community.


Position Details

Applicants who can work all summer are preferred however applicants with more limited availability will be considered depending on need. Employment can begin as early as May 1 and end as late as August 21. We are no longer accepting applications for Summer FDAs.

August 2016 – May 2017

All applicants must be able to work at least 8 hours/week. Those with greater availability are preferred. As an undergraduate Front Desk Assistant, the maximum amount of hours a student (domestic and international) can work may not exceed 20 hours per week. Graduate student Front Desk Assistants (domestic and international) may not exceed 29.5 hours per week. No Front Desk Assistant, including those holding other positions of employment at Vanderbilt, may work for the University for more than the aforementioned hours per week; however, there will be some occasions during university holidays and certain break periods where students will be permitted to earn hours beyond the standard 20 (or 29.5) hours per week limit.

Applications for new and returning FDAs will open on February 8th, 2016. All applications must be submitted by February 29th, 2016.
