Student Employment

Front Desk Assistant | Resident Advisor | Graduate Assistants | ResNet Assistant | Poster Patrol | Undergraduate Student Clerk | GraduateStudent Clerk | Conference Assistant |
The Office of Housing & Residential Education offers several student employment opportunities. Students may work up to 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters. During May and summer terms, some students may work up to 40 hours per week. Exceptions to these hour-per-week maximums are rare.

Front Desk Assistant (Reeves)

Front desk assistants currently staff the desks in nine of Vanderbilt's residence halls. Otherwise known as Reeves, they serve as customer service resources for residents, guests and visitors to the halls. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Arriving at least 5 minutes early to each shift
  • Signing in and out at the beginning and end of each shift
  • Filling out the Activity Log
  • Checking out equipment, such as vacuums, and Common Area Keys
  • Answering the phone
  • Observing traffic within the entrance areas of residence halls
  • Offering assistance to those who appear to need help

Reeves are able to schedule their own hours and are expected to be at the desk at all times during their shifts, attend monthly staff meetings and get substitutes for their shifts when needed. Reeves are required to work a minimum of 8 hours and a maximum of 20 hours per week. Missed shifts are not tolerated. Contingent upon the shift, compensation is between $5.50-$7.25 per hour but will increase to $6.55 - $8.30 beginning July 1, 2008. Applications for Fall 2008 positions can be found here.

Resident Adviser and Head Resident

Upper-class, graduate, and professional students may apply for these paraprofessional, part time, live-in positions in University residence halls. HR's and RA's are responsible for:

  • community development
  • social, educational and other programming
  • enforcing University policy
  • administrative tasks
  • peer counseling
Intensive, mandatory, pre-employment training is provided. Resident Adviser and Head Resident positions are filled in the spring for the following academic year, but applications are received at other times when vacancies occur. In most cases, Head Residents have at least a year's experience at Vanderbilt as an RA.

Graduate Assistants

Graduate Assistants in the Office of Housing and Residential Education work and conduct research in the following areas:

  • residence hall student government
  • peer judicial boards
  • honor system
  • living/learning centers
  • faculty in residence programs
  • housing assignments.
Preference is given to candidates with relevant experience and/or skills in any of the following areas:
  • writing
  • research methodology
  • statistics
  • database management
Generally, masters and doctoral candidates in higher education at Peabody College are preferred. Positions are filled in the spring for the following academic year.

ResNet Assistants

The ResNet student staff comprises resident students who assist other residents in connecting to the campus data and video networks. Students in these part-time positions work on an on-call basis, as needed. The student staff positions are usually filled from the pool of volunteers who work opening weekend in the fall. During the summer, ResNet offers full-time employment to students with programming experience to develop VUnet-connect software installers.

Poster Patrol

Duties consist mainly of monitoring bulletin boards and other surfaces to ensure compliance with University posting policies. Hours are flexible.

Undergraduate Student Clerks

Duties include running errands and making deliveries on campus, picking up mail, making and collating copies, assisting in bulk mailings, and other clerical duties.

Graduate Student Clerks

In addition to tasks listed under Undergraduate Student Clerk, duties include working with undergraduate student files and other confidential information, assisting with answering phones on occasion, and with scheduling appointments, completing other clerical and secretarial tasks, and restocking supplies.

Conference Assistants

Conference Assistants, under the direction of the Director of Conferences, are responsible for the daily success of the summer conference program. CA's serve as hosts to visiting not-for-profit groups, guests of University departments, and participants of University programs, and are involved in every element of the conference program, from pre-arrival preparations and post-departure duties, to fulfilling specific program requirements and needs. Positions are normally filled by mid February for the following summer. The term of the position runs from mid-May to mid-August. Campus housing is provided, and living on campus is mandatory.
