Social Activities

You'll notice we like to use the term residence hall instead of dormitory. That's because dormitory actually comes from a word that means sleep - and in our residence halls, you'll find a lot more than just a "place to crash" for the night.

The Office of Housing and Residential Education strives to create a residence hall environment in which students can participate in a wide variety of educational activities and events. We offer a diverse group of programs that will enrich your life and compliment your academic experience. Our programs are designed to help you:

  • find your place in a culturally diverse community
  • develop your life planning skills
  • enhance your understanding and appreciation of the arts
  • develop socially, intellectually, vocationally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.

All that to say that this place doesn't just shut down when the bell rings. At Vanderbilt, education is not just about hitting the books - it's also about learning to be part of a community: making new friends, getting along with others, achieving common goals. Our programs are designed to give you the total educational experience you need to find success in a global society.

Check out some the programs and activities we're planning for you:

Dinner!

Language Dinners at McTyeire International House provide residents with a unique opportunity to practice speaking another language on a daily basis with faculty members and other students. These dinners are open to any student who is interested. Please contact the McTyeire Program Director if you would like to come.

Dancing!

Each fall semester, Interhall sponsors the Freshmen Semi-formal where you can dress up and show your stuff on the dance floor.

Each spring semester, McTyeire International House and the McGill Project offer Ball Room Dance lessons in the residence halls. In just a few weeks, you'l be ready to swing to the live music at the annual Big Band Ball.

We also co-sponsor several campus-wide weekend parties each semester, such as the Annual Fright Night Haunted House & Costume Party and the Rave Techno Dance Party.

Recreation!

Whatever your game is, the residential staff is always ready to get some people together to play. Basketball, racket ball, tennis, soccer, wrestling, volleyball, swimming and ping pong are just some of the intermural sports available to you.

If you're a first year student, the Freshmen League will give you an opportunity to meet new friends and enjoy some friendly competition at the same time.

In addition, Swaps and Mixers for freshmen allow students to have fun and get to know each other better at the same time.

Relaxation!

Sometimes college life can be pretty intense. That's why we sponsor programs that teach you relaxation techniques and stress management skills - all right here on campus.

Held this past year on the last day of classes, the International Stress Fest introduced students to relaxation techniques from around the world. Weary scholars got soothing massages, sampled "comfort foods" from different cultures and tried their hand at painting and origami.

Long hours spent studying can make a person hungry for food and friendly faces. Our regularly planned study breaks give you the opportunity to grab a snack and just hang out with friends for a few minutes.
