Faculty Friendships
We're constantly working to increase
the interaction between students and faculty
outside of the classroom. Research has consistently shown the
benefits of such interaction:
- higher levels of class participation
- greater satisfaction with courses
- less time spent watching television
- greater appreciation of the arts
- more personal involvement in the life of the campus
- more time spent in group study.
Faculty in Residence
The Faculty in Residence program is a unique arrangement in which faculty
members actually live in apartments located in undergraduate residence halls.
This enhances the possibility of interaction between faculty member and students
in informal settings outside of the classroom.
Students in these halls can develop friendships and mentoring relationships with
popular and interesting faculty members and their spouses.
Current Faculty in Residence
Dr. William Franke,
Associate Professor of Comparative Literature, Italian and Religious Studies
Kissam Hall (Dr. Franke frequently joins in the activities at McTyeire International House.)
Dr. Jim Lang,
Professor of Sociology and Latin American Studies
Tolman Hall (where Jim lives with his wife, Cecilia.)
Doug Fisher,
Associate Professor of Computer Science & Computer Engineering
McGill Hall
Tom Schwartz,
Professor of History
Sutherland House
Faculty Advisors
Faculty Advisors work closely with students in a number of residential programs,
including the McGill Project, the McTyeire International House, and the
Mayfield Living/Learning Lodge program. Faculty members are frequently invited
to residence halls to present or participate in programs:
Over 100 classes are actually taught in residence hall seminar rooms each semester.
Community Vanderbilt, an organization founded by students, creates opportunities for
faculty, staff and students to interact outside the classroom while discussing current
issues. Previous forums have attracted over 100 participants with topics such
as "Money: Something We All See but Never Talk About" and "Racial Issues".
The McGill Hour brings faculty into the residence halls once a week
to get students involved in some interactive (and sometimes crazy) fun. Make slime with a chemistry
professor or learn how musical instruments from Africa are used to convey feelings and emotions.
You'll also find Faculty members mixing it up with students in a game of pick-up basketball, going the distance
in the Race for the Cure or joining student Tiger Woods wannabes in the Lupton Professor’s Cup Golf
Tournament.
