About Living/Learning Centers
Vanderbilt's Living/Learning Centers provide opportunities
for students with similar educational interests to live together in residence
halls offering structured learning environments. These centers are sponsored by
the Office of Housing and Residential Education with the support of various academic
departments and faculty members.
The Concept
The fundamental premise of the living-learning relationship is that the residence hall
is an important part of the total educational experience at Vanderbilt University.
If students who live together focus around a common educational purpose, their residential
experience will reinforce their academic goals.
Because a Living/Learning Center tends to focus on a certain academic discipline, it's natural
to find students majoring in subjects related to that focus living there. However,
students from any school or discipline who wish to live in a Living/Learning Center
are welcome. Both men and women may participate in any of these unique progams.
In general, only upperclass students are assigned to Living/Learning
Centers. On occasion, applications from second semester freshmen have been considered
for spring semester vacancies in the McTyeire International House.
Residential Staff
In addition to the Assistant Director, Head Resident and Resident Advisors,
Living/Learning Centers also have Program Coordinators, who plan and oversee programs for
the residence hall in which they live. There may be more than one Program Coordinator
in a Center. McTyeire has several, each representing a different language.
