October In the final issue of each month, the Register publishes grants in excess of $25,000 that were awarded for the previous month. The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in October that the following grants had been awarded: Mark Abkowitz, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $580,000 by the Tennessee Department of Transportation for “Intelligent Transportation Systems and Incident Management Program Development and Implementation.” Malcolm Baird is co-principal investigator. Mark Berends, Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $54,178 by the Spencer Foundation for “Structure and Effects of Tracking in the U.S.: A Temporal Perspective.” John Bransford, Department of Psychology and Human Development in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $339,261 by Young Audiences, Incorporated for “Arts, Education, and the Use of Technology.” Helen Bateman is co-principal investigator. Kenneth Galloway, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $43,269 by the Department of Defense for “Technology Development Support.” Charles Utrias is co-principal investigator. Ellen Goldring, Department of Leadership, Policy, and Organizations in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $172,288 by the W.T. Grant Foundation for “Reclaiming Communities: Diversity, Equity, and Access in the Post-Busing Era.” Claire Smrekar and Robert Crowson are co-principal investigators. Thomas Harris, Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $2 million by the National Science Foundation for “The Vanderbilt-Northwestern-Texas-Harvard/MIT (VaNTH) Engineering Research Center for Bioengineering Educational Technology.” Kevin Leander, Department of Teaching and Learning in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $35,000 by the Spencer Foundation for “A Connective Ethnography of Adolescent Communication Practices Across Online and Offline Contexts.” Mark Lipsey, Vanderbilt Institute for Public Policy Studies Central, has been awarded a grant of $125,000 by the National Institute of Justice for “Meta-Analytic Database on Effectiveness of Delinquency Programs: Update, Analysis, and Dissemination.” Sankaran Mahadevan, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $50,000 by the Department of Energy for “Modeling and Simulation for Design Under Uncertainty.” C. Robert O’Dell, Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $73,147 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for “Determining the Physical Processes, Origin, and Fate of Cometary Knots in the Helix Nebula.” Nilanjan Sarkar, Department of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $109,483 by the Department of Defense for “Intelligent Fault Adaptive Control of a Team of Autonomous Mobile Robots.” John Wikswo Jr., Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $95,152 by the Department of Defense for “SQUID Mannetometer Array for Laboratory Measurements of the Rate of Hidden Corrosion in Aging Aircraft.” Posted 11/25/02 at 10 a.m. |
