HodgsonPeter C. Hodgson, Ph.D.
Charles G. Finney Professor of Theology, Emeritus
Peter C. Hodgson earned an A.B. in history from Princeton University in 1956. He then attended Yale University, earning a B.D. in 1959, an M.A. in 1960, and a Ph.D. in 1963. From 1963 to 1965, he was an assistant professor at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas. He has been a member of the Vanderbilt faculty since 1965.

Hodgson’s research and teaching focus on theology. He has distinguished himself with work in both historical and constructive theology. He is a leading translator of the works of G.W.F. Hegel and the author of numerous articles and essays and of 11 books: The Formation of Historical Theology: A Study of Ferdinand Christian Baur (1966); Jesus — Word and Presence: An Essay in Christology (1971); Children of Freedom: Black Liberation in Christian Perspective (1974); New Birth of Freedom: A Theology of Bondage and Liberation (1976); Revisioning the Church: Ecclesial Freedom in the New Paradigm (1988); God in History: Shapes of Freedom (1989); Winds of the Spirit: A Constructive Christian Theology (1994); G.W.F. Hegel: Theologian of the Spirit (1997); God’s Wisdom: Toward a Theology of Education (1999); The Mystery Beneath the Real: Theology in the Fiction of George Eliot (2001); and Christian Faith: A Brief Introduction (2001).

Hodgson has demonstrated continuous leadership in graduate education at Vanderbilt. He chaired the Graduate Department of Religion at three different times between 1975 and 2001, served on the Graduate Faculty Council, and chaired the Graduate Department of Religion Long-Range Planning Committee for five years. He also served on the University Research Council, the Graduate Dean Search Committee, the Faculty Senate, and the University Committee on Promotion and Tenure, and was chair of the Divinity faculty.
