the final issue of each month, the Register publishes grants
in excess of $25,000 that were awarded the previous month. The Division
of Sponsored Research received notification in January that the following
grants had been awarded: Robert Bodenheimer, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $91,583 by the National Science Foundation for “CAREER: Implementing and Assessing Human Animation in Pedagogical Agents.” Peter Cummings, Department of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $725,989 by the National Science Foundation for “Multiscale Simulation of the Synthesis, Assembly, and Properties of Nanostructured Organic/Inorganic Hybrid Material.” Peter Cummings, Department of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $165,000 by the Department of Energy for “Molecular Modeling and Simulation of Aqueous Electrolyte Systems.” Jim Davidson, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $171,841 by the Department of Defense for “Compact Man-Portable Power Generation by Electron Emission from Diamond Nanostructures.” Judy Garber, Department of Psychology and Human Development in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $405,612 by the Public Health Service for “Prevention of Depression in At-Risk Adolescents.” Steven Hollon is co-principal investigator. Isabel Gauthier, Department of Psychology in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $108,205 by the National Science Foundation for “Collaborative: Categorization and Expertise in Human Visual Cognition II.” Thomas R. Harris, Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $299,994 by the National Science Foundation for “The Vanderbilt-Northwestern-Texas-Harvard/MIT (VaNTH) Engineering Research Center for Bioengineering Educational Technology.” Robert Roselli is co-principal investigator. Gabor Karsai, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $728,100 by the Department of Defense for “Autonomous Negotiating Teams and Model-Integrated Computing for Autonomic Logistics.” Piotr Kaszynski, Department of Chemistry in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $100,001 by the National Science Foundation for “Boron-containing Materials for Electro-Optical Applications.” David Kosson, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $155,704 by the Department of Energy for “Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation II.” M. Douglas LeVan, Department of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $78,320 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for “Separation of Carbon Monoxide and Carbon Dioxide for Mars In-Situ Resource Utilization.” Douglas McMahon, Department of Biological Sciences in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $195,492 by the Public Health Service for “Mechanisms of Retinal Synaptic Plasticity.” Phyllis McWilliam, Department of Special Education in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $174,796 by the Department of Education for “Case Method of Instruction Outreach Project: Outreach Projects for Children with Disabilities.” Sandeep Neema, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $200,000 by the Department of Defense for “Model Integrated Synthesis of QoS Adaptive Middleware.” Anirudda Gokhale is co-principal investigator. Sokrates Pantelides, Department of Physics and Astronomy in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $29,000 by the Department of Energy for “Excited-State Electronic Structure and Response Functions.” Jeffrey Schall, Department of Psychology in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $302,000 by the Public Health Service for “Neural Control of Voluntary Movement.” Michael Stone, Department of Chemistry in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $264,250 by the Public Health Service for “DNA Adducts of Styrene and Other Vinyl Monomers.” Michael Stone, Department of Chemistry in the School of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $49,463 by the Public Health Service for “Relationship Between DNA Structure and Adduct Formation.” Correction: Akos Ledeczi’s name was omitted from the January grants listing.
