Vanderbilt celebrates its 130th anniversary March 17
The 130th anniversary of Vanderbilt’s founding will be celebrated March 17, the day in 1873 Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt gave the first installment of the $1 million gift to Bishop Holland McTyeire. A wreath ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. in front of the statue of Cornelius Vanderbilt at the University’s main entrance. Students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni and a member of the McTyeire family will be on hand to represent each of the University’s constituencies. A second ceremony will take place at the campus gravesite of Holland and his wife, Amelia McTyeire. Chancellor Gordon Gee will make remarks at both ceremonies. Following the two ceremonies, cake and refreshments will be served in the main lobby of Kirkland Hall. The display cases on the second floor of Kirkland will include items reflective of the University’s founding. The entire University community is invited to attend the celebration.
Symposium addresses arbitration March 14-15
Vanderbilt’s Journal of Transitional Law will host a symposium on the topic of arbitration on an international level. Past justice and president of the International Court of Justice at the Hague, Steven Schwebel, as well as other prominent scholars will participate in the International Commercial Arbitration Symposium at the Law School March 14-15. Eight hours of Tennessee Continuing Legal Education credit is available to attendees. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis for non-CLE attendees. Technology transfer office hosts patent and intellectual property seminar March 18
The Office of Technology Transfer will host a seminar on the basics of patenting and intellectual property protection March 18. The seminar will be conducted by Steven Highlander, an intellectual property attorney for Fulbright & Jaworski in Austin, Texas. The seminar will be held in Featheringill Hall Room 138, from 3 to 4:15 p.m., is open to the public although it will focus on the interests and needs of faculty members. Bookstore’s annual Crazy Sale scheduled for March 20-21
The University Bookstore is conducting its annual Crazy Sale in tents outside of Rand Hall March 20-21. The sale will include a variety of items sold in the bookstore for 25 percent off. The sale will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 20, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 21. For details, call the main bookstore at 322-2994.
Nashville Ballet and Blair School of Music unveil ‘Emergence’
Nashville Ballet and Blair School of Music have joined their creative forces to introduce Emergence!, an evening of creation, presenting all new works by regional, emerging choreographers at 8 p.m. March 14-15 at the Martha Rivers Ingram Center for the Performing Arts. Support for the project has been provided by the Martin Foundation and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The event introduces new choreography created by choreographers Heather Maloy, Paul Vasterling and Robert Philander with all new music composed, arranged and performed by Blair faculty members Michael Rose, Crystal Plohman and Stan Link and featuring Blair’s New Music Ensemble. Current, former smokers sought for major study
Fifty thousand current and former smokers are needed for a new study to determine if screening people with either spiral computerized tomography or chest X-ray before they have symptoms can reduce deaths from lung cancer. The National Lung Screening Trial will will take place at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center and 29 other sites throughout the United States. The study is sponsored by the National Cancer Institute. Participants in NLST will receive lung cancer screenings free of charge. Men and women may be able to participate in NLST if they meet the following requirements:
- Are current or former smokers ages 55-74
- Have never had lung cancer and have not had any cancer within the last five years
- Are not currently enrolled in any other cancer screening or cancer prevention trial
- Have not had a CT scan of the chest or lungs within the last 18 months.
