02/11/03 Alumnus, longtime sportswriter Fred Russell dies at 96
Fred Russell, the sports writing legend for the Nashville Banner for nearly 70 years, died Jan. 26. He was 96. Russell, who attended Vanderbilt in the late 1920s, became the Banner’s sports editor in 1930 at the age of 24. He later served as the paper’s vice president. He called Nashville home for more than 82 years. Throughout his honored career, Russell rubbed shoulders with the icons of American sports. He counted golfer Bobby Jones and boxer Jack Dempsey as personal friends, and interviewed the likes of Babe Ruth, Muhammad Ali and Ty Cobb. The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Hall of Fame inductee wrote over 12,000 newspaper columns, as well as articles for the Saturday Evening Post in annual college football preview sections, and an autobiography, Bury Me in an Old Press Box: Good Times and Life of a Sportswriter. Memorial services were held Jan. 29.

The economic concerns of Major League Baseball — from labor-management relations and legal issues to competitive balance and contraction — will be the focus of a one-day conference at Vanderbilt Feb. 21. Academics, sports writers, attorneys and representatives of Major League Baseball and the MLB Players’ Association will gather here for a series of sessions about the business side of our national pastime. The conference is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Flynn Auditorium. There is no registration fee for the conference, but space is limited and reservations are required. Faculty and staff are invited to join Chancellor Gordon Gee, Constance Gee and Vanderbilt students in an evening of dance, food and fun at the Chancellor’s Inaugural Cupid’s Costume Ball. The event will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Stadium Club. Dress is semi-formal, cocktail attire or dress as a famous couple. The band Super T will provide the entertainment. Hors d’oeuvres will be provided and a cash bar will be available for those over 21 years of age. Admission is free, but space is limited. Tickets may be so picked up at the Sarratt Main Desk Box Office. Limit two tickets per Vanderbilt I.D. Marriott parking is $3. For more information, call the Office of Student Activities at 322-2471.
