Awards and Honors
Rhonda Phillippi, assistant in pediatrics and director of Tennessee EMS for Children at the Children’s Hospital, was recently presented the 2002 President’s Award by the Rural Health Association of Tennessee at their annual conference. Phillippi was re-elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors for RHAT.

Appointments and Elections
Leonard Bradley, lecturer, was named by Sen. Steve Cohen to a 16-member a task force of education leaders to study other states’ lotteries.

Andy Stricker, associate provost of innovation through technology, was appointed to serve as Vanderbilt’s liaison to the Center for Information Technology Education of Tennessee.

Marjorie Spruill, associate vice chancellor for institutional planning and research professor of history, was recently elected to three-year term on the Southern Historical Association’s Executive Council.

Papers and Presentations
Michael Aurbach, professor of art, was invited to lecture at a number of institutions this fall. The list of institutions where he made presentations includes the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, Cornell University, the University of Southern California, the Rhode Island School of Design, the University of Iowa, the University of Florida, Boston College and Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. His recent sculpture titled “The Critical Theorist” won best of show honors at the Southeastern College Art Conference Exhibition in Mobile, Ala.

R. Wilburn Clouse, associate professor of leadership, policy and organizations, co-presented the research paper “Entrepreneurs in Action” with graduate students Terry Goodin, Jeff Burgoyne and Mark Davey at the 20th annual Entrepreneurs Education Forum in Charlotte, N.C. Nov. 4.

Peter Cummings, the John R. Hall Professor of Chemical Engineering, presented a plenary talk in the Second Topical Conference on Nanoscale Science and Engineering, held at the Annual Meeting of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in Indianapolis, Ind., Nov. 3-8. The title of his presentation was “Theory, Modeling and Simulation in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology: Challenges and Opportunities.” He also presented an invited talk on molecular simulation of nanoscopic materials, and was co-author or speaker on another 10 talks presented at the meeting by current and former members of his research group. He began a two-year elected term as chair of the Computational Molecular Science and Engineering Forum, one of the 21 programming committees of the AIChE, during the meeting.

James W. Ely, Milton R. Underwood Chair in Free Enterprise, FedEx Research Professor and professor of law, delivered the Distinguished Lecture in Real Property at the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in November. Ely’s lecture was titled “Can the ‘Despotic Power’ be Tamed? Reconsidering the Public Use Limitation on Eminent Domain.”

Luigi Monga, professor of French and Italian, presented a plenary address on “Translating the Journey: A Literary Perspective of Truth in Cartography” at the Royal Irish Academy Modern Language Symposium, hosted by the National University of Ireland at Galway Nov. 9. Nov. 8 and 11, he offered a seminar on “The Quest for Truth: Towards a Taxonomy of Hodoeporics” at the National University of Ireland, Galway and Trinity College, Dublin. Nov. 13, 14 and 16, he offered seminars on “Problemi di odeporica: il gradiente di fiction nella letteratura di viaggio,” “Tradurre il viaggio: disegni e carte geografiche come complementi del testo odeporico,” “Forme e contenuti della scrittura di viaggio,” at the Università di Catania in Italy. Nov. 15, he gave the official lecture at the opening of the academic year (prolusione all‚anno accademico) at the Università di Ragusa Ibla in Italy, “Letteratura e cartografia nell‚era delle grandi scoperte: verità, mitologia e invenzione.”

Michael Plummer, professor of mathematics, presented an invited talk titled “Edge Proximity and Watching Extension in Planar Triangulations” at the Special Session of the American Mathematical Society Sectional Meeting in Orlando, Fla., Nov. 7-11.

Robert A. Weller, associate professor of electrical engineering, delivered the invited presentation titled, “A comprehensive computational workbench for surface analysis,” to the American Vacuum Society International annual meeting, held Nov. 3-8 in Denver and to the Conference on the Application of Accelerators in Research and Industry, held at the University of North Texas in Denton, Nov. 13-16.

Professional Activities
Mark Hodges, professor of medical administration, emeritus, was the moderator at a session marking the 25th anniversary of the founding of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries. The session, “Looking Back,” was part of the 25th annual meeting of AAHSL, held in conjunction with the 113th annual meeting of the Association of American Medical Colleges in San Francisco, Nov. 8-13. Hodges is a charter member of AAHSL.

Publications
Katherine Barbieri, assistant professor of political science, had her book The Liberal Illusion. Does Trade Promote Peace? published by the University of Michigan Press.

Vivien Green Fryd, associate professor of art history and American and Southern studies had her book Art and the Crisis of Marriage: Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper published by the University of Chicago Press.

In Memoriam
Dr. Victor Najjar, former chair of the Department of Microbiology, died Nov. 30. Najjar, 88, joined Vanderbilt in 1957 to establish a microbiology department.
