In the final issue of each month, the Register publishes grants in excess of $25,000 that were awarded for the previous month. The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in August that the following grants had been awarded:

Anne Corn, Department of Special Education in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $299,231 by the Department of Education for “Pre-service Preparation for Teachers of Students with Visual Impairments.”

Joseph Cunningham, Department of Human and Organizational Development in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $1,616,479 by the Department of Education for “GEAR UP Nashville.” Marcy Singer Gabella is co-principal investigator.

Don Doyle, Department of History in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $91,530 by the National Endowment for the Humanities for “Faulkner and Southern History.”

Brad Gray, Department of Student Services, has been awarded a grant of $39,445 by the Corporation for National Service for “Intercambio/Exchange: Service Learning with Nashville’s Hispanic Community.”

Douglas Hardin, Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $40,000 by the National Science Foundation for “Computational Equipment for Approximation Theory, Control Theory, and Graph Theory.” Mark Ellingham, Mary Ann Horn and Edward Saff are co-principal investigators.

Thomas R. Harris, Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $2,500,000 by the National Science Foundation for “The Vanderbilt-Northwestern-Texas-Harvard/MIT (VaNTH) Engineering Research Center for Bioengineering Educational Technology.”

Hans-Willi Honegger, Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $116,000 by the National Science Foundation for “Collaborative Research: The Molecular Identification and Action of Bursicon, the Insect Cuticle Sclerotizing Hormone.”

Carl Johnson, Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $339,750 by the Public Health Service for “Molecular/Genetic Analysis of Biological Clocks in Cells.”

Ann Kaiser, Department of Special Education in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $150,000 by the Department of Health and Human Services for “Building Social Communication Skills During Peer Interaction.”

Gabor Karsai, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $206,000 by the Department of Defense for “National Experiment Platform for Embedded and Hybrid Systems Technology.”

Gabor Karsai, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $80,000 by the Department of Defense for “Web-based Open Tool Integration Framework.”

Kazuhiko Kawamura, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $40,000 by the Department of Defense for “Acquisition of Autonomous Behaviors by Robotic Assistants.” Richard Peters, Robert Bodenheimer and Nilanjan Sarkar are co-principal investigators.

Charles Kinzer, Department of Teaching and Learning in the Peabody College, has been awarded a grant of $355,641 by the National Science Foundation for “Best Practices — Teacher Preparation- Technology: Connections that Enhance Children’s Literacy Acquisition and Reading Achievement.”

David Kosson, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $146,037 by the National Science Foundation for “Acquisition of Advanced Test Equipment for Infrastructure Materials Reliability, Risk Assessment, and Performance Enhancement.” Prodyot Basu, Kevin Tseng and Roy Xu are co-principal investigators.

Tingyu Li, Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $111,019 by the Public Health Service for “Toward the Development of More Efficient Chiral Stationary Phases: Combinatorial Libraries and Other Studies.”

Mark Lipsey, Department of VIPPS Central, has been awarded a grant of $113,250 by the Public Health Service for “Meta-Analysis of Risk for Antisocial Behavior.”

Frank Parker, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $50,000 by the Department of Defense for “Chinese Nuclear Legacy.”

James Patton, Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $82,153 by the Public Health Service for “Short-term Research Training for Minority Students.”

David Piston, Department of Physics in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $52,074 by the MXIS Systems Inc., for “Technical Services for MXIS Systems Inc.”

Karthik Srinivasan, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $149,550 by the National Science Foundation for “Dynamic and Stochastic Network Models for Real-time Reservations Control Problem in Service Sectors.” Sankaran Mahedevan is co-principal investigator.

Robert Stammer, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $30,000 by the Department of Transportation for “Vanderbilt Institute for Studies for Transportation Academy-Advanced Institute Year 8.”

Michael Stone, Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Science, has been awarded a grant of $1,100,404 by the Public Health Service for “Chemistry and Biology of Carcinogen-DNA Adducts.”

Janos Sztipanovits, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $359,996 by the Department of Defense for “Layered Fault Management Architectures.” Ronald Schrimpf, Theodore Bapty and Lloyd Massengill are co-principal investigators.

Robert Tanner, Department of Chemical Engineering in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $54,763 by the Public Health Service for “NanoBioReactor: Basic Biological and Physical Measurements.”

Robert Weller, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science in the School of Engineering, has been awarded a grant of $154,951 by the Department of Defense for “Acquisition of a Multi-Technique Proximal Probe System for Nanoscale Science and Engineering.” Richard Haglund Jr. and Leonard Feldman are co-principal investigators
