Faculty and Staff Notes

To the editor,
I would like to voice my opinion concerning your article [“Faculty members take Bush to task over military aggression toward Iraq” Vanderbilt Register, Oct. 14-27, www.vanderbilt.edu/register/Sep30_02/20021009teachin.html]. Just by reading the opinions voiced by the faculty and students quoted, I have come to the conclusion that probably none of these people have ever served a day of military duty in their lives. In my opinion, most of these people are radical left-sided liberals. If we were to take action against Iraq, we would not be doing it strictly on U.S. interests alone. The leadership of Iraq is a danger to every one of its border countries and possibly to every single freedom loving democratic society in the world. A pre-emptive war is not a sign of arrogance by any means. If we do not act, and Iraq is more advanced than we believe them to be with their NBC weapons, then most of these doubters would be questioning why [George W.] Bush did not act soon enough. We should exhaust all diplomatic means necessary, which we are close to doing, then and only then should we use military force. President Bush has plainly made the case for action against Iraq. The views expressed by many of the speakers and students in your article are like a slap in the face to any and all veterans that have fought and spilled their blood so that we may have the freedoms that we enjoy today. I would hope that once we do take action against Iraq, they would rally behind our leaders and troops.

To the editor,
As a nurse at VUMC I am tired of just hearing the one sided liberal view coming from the campus's newspapers. I am yet to see a conservative view shown in a favorable light. I thought the article [“Faculty members take Bush to task over military aggression toward Iraq, “ Vanderbilt Register, Oct. 14-27, www.vanderbilt.edu/register/Sep30_02/20021009teachin.html] condescending and offensive. No one is for "killing" but appeasement never brings peace. Just ask Israel. The more land given up the more land that is demanded by the Palestineans and the more they are attacked. The same people who protest our protecting our freedom are the ones who asked after Sept. 11 why our government did not protect us. Did doing nothing save us from Sept 11? If your faculty thinks it can do a better job of running the country and protecting us then they need to submit their ideas to President [George W.] Bush along with their critical letter. I do not look to them anyway for wisdom or direction and it is scary to me that they are teaching our young Americans to cower in exchange for peace. Political correctness has severely weakened our country. Yes, we can sit back and never defend ourselves again but I personally don't want to walk outside and see a flag from Iraq in place of "Old Glory". As Patrick Henry said, "Any Nation that would trade liberty for peace deserves neither."
Sincerely,

Lia Freeman
