How
to Get Involved in Preventing Violence Against Women in Your Organization
| Living
violence free means changing the attitudes, behaviors and beliefs
that allow violence to continue at the individual, community
and societal level. |
Here
are a few examples of what you can do:
- Attend
a program about violence against women on Vanderbilts campus.
- Wear
a white ribbon as your personal pledge not to condone acts of
violence and to never commit violence/ Wear a purple ribbon during
October to show your support for survivors of domestic violence/
Organize a purple-ribbon campaign.
- Write
your congressperson to encourage her to support legislation to
help survivors of domestic violence and rape.
- Gather
a group of friends and show a video on violence against women.
Invite someone with knowledge on the subject to facilitate a discussion
following the showing.
- Invite
a guest speaker to a bag lunch at your organization.
- Collect
resources and information from the Womens Center or community
service providers to distribute in your organization.
- Ask
leaders in your organization to develop guidelines for a violence-free
environment. Be sure to talk about jokes, language, verbal and
sexual put-downs and the role these behaviors play in abuse.
- Write
articles about violence prevention for the school paper.
- Hand
in Hand program
- Peer
Educator program
- Collaborate
with other organizations to bring a nationally recognized speaker
to campus
