Kathy Hoover-Dempsey, Ph.D.,
is Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology and Human Development
at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Her research program focuses
on parental involvement in elementary and middle school children's schooling
and the influence of parents' involvement activities on students' educational
and developmental outcomes. Grounded in a model of the parental involvement
process (Hoover-Dempsey & Sandler, 1995, 1997, 2005), she and her colleagues
are currently investigating (a) why parents become involved in their children's
education and (b) how their involvement, once engaged, influences proximal
(e.g., academic self-efficacy, self-regulation) and distal student outcomes
(e.g., achievement). With her colleagues, she has also developed and evaluated
school-based interventions designed to increase the incidence and
effectiveness of teacher invitations to parents' involvement.)
