Most universities do not have an office of science and research communications. Science communications is not given a special priority. Instead, it is considered just one aspect of general media relations and it is taken care of by a science writer or two working in the campus public information office. The fact that Vanderbilt has established a special office in its Division of Public Affairs is an institutional expression of the conviction that science and research communications is especially important to the future of the university and requires specialized treatment.

The office is one of the few university media relations offices headed by a scientist, rather than a public relations specialist. Its charter is not only to promote the reputation of Vanderbilt as one of the top research universities in the country, but also to work toward improving the basic process of science communications nationwide.
