Dr. Shirley Hercules, the director of the internship program for the Office of Science and Research Communications, received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Juniata College, her master's degree in biochemistry from Harvard University, and her D.M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Although she has worked both as a chemist and as a practicing dentist, the majority of her career has been spent in the communications arena. She has been a technical writer and seminar leader for a scientific instrumentation firm, a free-lance science writer, and a science writer at the University of Pittsburgh and Vanderbilt University.
