Truman informational meeting

The Truman Scholarship Committee will nominate three Vanderbilt students for this year’s awards. Students who have competed two academic years of study by the beginning of the current semester and will qualify for senior status by the beginning of the 2000-2001 academic year are eligible to apply. The nominating committee’s selections will be based on the following criteria: record of public and community service and activities; commitment to careers in the public sector; leadership potential; intellectual and analytical abilities; academic record and class standing. In a significant change from previous years, universities may now nominate students who intend to attend law school and work toward their J.D. degree.

There will be an informational meeting for interested students at 4 p.m., Sept. 23 in Room 200, Benson Hall. Those who cannot attend may obtain an information sheet on the competition in the A & S Dean’s Office, 301 Kirkland Hall or contact Prof. Schwartz at 343-4328.

Benefits fair to be held

This year’s benefits fair, with a theme of “Prepare For 2000,” will be held Sept. 21-22 in Rooms 2701-2704 of The Vanderbilt Clinic, from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Employees who visit the vendor area can talk with the experts and register to win a door prize. Represent-atives of every benefit plan are scheduled to attend to explain their plans.

Workshops and forums offered throughout the week of Sept. 20 will offer opportunities to learn more about the different health care, dental and retirement plans offered. For more information, call the Benefits Office at 322-8330. Open enrollment this year will run from Oct. 1 through Oct. 15.

Faculty lunches start new year

The first interdisciplinary faculty lunch of the year will be held Sept. 27 at noon at the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities. Susan Wiltshire, professor of classics, and Mark Bandas, associate dean, office of Residential and Judicial Affairs, will speak on the topic, “Living and Learning in Residential Colleges.” Wiltshire, chair of the Committee on Liberal Undergraduate Education (CLUE) subcommittee on residential colleges, will review the CLUE recommendation that Vanderbilt consider establishing a residential college system. Dean Bandas will clarify the meaning of the concept of a residential college by providing a brief historical overview of the concept and by examining some of its contemporary embodiments at peer institutions. There will be opportunity for discussion following their remarks. The brown-bag lunch, sponsored by the Office of the University Chaplains, is open to the Vanderbilt community.
