Alan Shapiro

Event of the Week

Poet Alan Shapiro will read from his work Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. in Room 126, Wilson Hall. The reading, which is free and open to the public, is part of the Gertrude and Harold S. Vanderbilt Visiting Writers Program, sponsored by the Department of English. A brief reception will follow. Shapiro’s books will be available for purchase at the reading, courtesy of the Vanderbilt Bookstore.

Shapiro, a professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, is the author of five books of poetry: After the Digging (1981), The Courtesy (1983), Happy Hour (1987), Covenant (1991) and Mixed Company (1992). Happy Hour was nominated for the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1988. Shapiro is also the author of prose works, including In Praise of the Impure: Poetry and the Ethical Imagination (1993), a collection of critical essays, and The Last Happy Occasion (1996) and Vigil (1997), both autobiographical works.Vigil, whicch chronicles the death of the poet’s sister from breast cancer, won the New England booksellers Association Award.

Shapiro received his bachelor of arts degree from Brandeis in 1974 and then was a Stegner Fellow in poetry at Stanford the following year. He has been a Guggenheim Fellow in poetry, a recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts writer’s fellowship, and was the recipient, from 1992 to 1995, of a prestigious Lila Wallace Readers Digest Award.
