Talk chalk with Coach Woody

Coach Woody Widenhofer will host a weekly "Chalk Talk" to discuss the ins and outs of the Commodores' upcoming games. The sessions take place on Wednesdays from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. in Rand Hall faculty dining room. Chalk Talk dates are Sept. 17, 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 22, Nov. 5 and 12.

Metro channel to air Nashville Forum

The Metro Government Access Channel (channel 3) will re-broadcast a recent presentation by Mark A. Cohen, an associate professor of management at the Owen Graduate School, to the Nashville Forum on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The program is scheduled to air at 7, 8 and 9 p.m.

In his presentation, Cohen addressed the economic impact of crime and violence in Nashville and the monetary value of saving high-risk youth.

'Tour of Homes' set for Sept. 27

The Belmont-Hillsboro Neighbors Association will holds its annual "Tour of Homes" Saturday, Sept. 27.

Twelve homes and one garden make up this year's tour. The architectural styles of the homes include four squares, bungalows, a Victorian cottage, a Dutch colonial, a log cabin and a home in the midst of renovation. The homes are located at 1406 Beechwood Ave., 1711 Beechwood Ave., 1207 Linden Ave., 1702 Linden Ave., 1719 Linden Ave., 1811 Blair Blvd., 1900 Blair Blvd., 2227 Belmont Blvd., 2613 Belmont Blvd.; 2708 Belmont Blvd., 2911 Belmont Blvd., 2002 Cedar Lane and the garden is located at 1501 Elmwood.

Tour hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at any of the homes or in advance from area merchants. For more information, call 386-3711.

Organized in 1971, Belmont-Hillsboro Neighbors is a nonprofit organization comprised of residents, both owners and renters, who are working together to encourage good relations, preserve residential quality and maintain the diversity of the Belmont-Hillsboro neighborhood.

VanderBuilds seeks members

VanderBuilds, a new student volunteer organization at Vanderbilt University, is seeking students interested in community service.

The organization builds wheelchair ramps in Nashville for persons with disabilities and sponsors various activities to increase community awareness of persons with disabilities.

VanderBuilds, an extension of a Nashville Alternative Spring Break Site, is affiliated with Nashville United Cerebral Palsy.

Ragan named new golf coach

Jim Ragan of the University of Texas has been named head coach of the Vanderbilt men's golf team.

He has served as assistant men's golf coach at the University of Texas since 1994, directing recruitment along with coaching and administrative responsibilities. During his years at Texas, the golf team finished third in the 1994 NCAA Tournament.

Cancer institute sponsors projects

The Vanderbilt Cancer Center announces the availability of pilot project funds from the National Cancer Institute Cancer Center Support Grant. Emphasis will be placed on funding collaborative research initiatives between investigators studying novel approaches to cancer cause, prevention and treatment.

Funds are available to faculty in all schools of Vanderbilt University. A maximum $20,000 is available for each project. It is anticipated that three to four applications will be funded. The awards will be for Feb. 1, 1998, through Jan. 31, 1999.

The deadline for submission of applications is Nov. 15. Applications and guidelines for submission are available from Johnson Eyadiel in Room 649 Medical Research Building II, on-campus extension 6-1789.

Cancer research funds available

Applications are being taken to receive funds from an American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant designed to provide seed money to junior faculty members with an interest in cancer research but who have no national grant support of their own or who have not received prior support from the IRG.

Faculty members with an interest in the psychosocial and behavioral aspects of cancer as well as in biomedical research are encouraged to apply.

Funds are available to all schools of Vanderbilt and individual allocations are limited to a maximum $20,000. The awards will be for Jan. 1, 1998, through Dec. 31, 1998. The ACS Institutional Research Grant Committee will consider all applications for funds on a priority basis.

Deadline for application is Oct. 1. The awards will be announced in December.
