Douglas Fuchs and Lynn Fuchs, professors of special education, have had two papers recognized for excellence. "A Historical Perspective on Special Education Reform," which appeared in the winter 1996 issue of Theory Into Practice, was selected for an award in the learned article category of the Education Press Association of America 1997 competition. "Bridging the Research-To-Practice Gap with Mainstream Assistance Teams: A Cautionary Tale," co-authored with Research Assistant Professor of Education Alene Harris, was selected as co-winner of the 1996 School Psychology Quarterly/American Psychological Association Division 16 Fellows award for best article.

Ephrahim Garcia, associate professor of mechanical engineering, Michael Goldfarb, assistant professor of mechanical engineering, Lloyd Massengill, associate professor of electrical engineering and of computer engineering, have received a $904,000 grant from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.

Their three-year proposed project, titled "Utilization of Elasto-Dynamic Locomotion in Mesoscale Robotic Insects," is aimed at constructing new breeds of robotic crawlers and flyers for defense-related reconnaissance. Professor Michael Murphy of Louisiana State University is also involved in the project.

Roland T. Rust, Madison S. Wigginton Professor of Management and director of the Center for Service Marketing, has been named a fellow of the American Statistical Association.

The designation of Fellow is a singular honor in the ASA and has for more than 75 years signified an individual's outstanding professional contribution and leadership in the field of statistical science. This year 56 members of the association were awarded the Fellows honor.

The American Statistical Association, founded in Boston in 1839, is one of the country's oldest professional associations. Early members included Florence Nightingale, Martin Van Buren, Alexander Graham Bell, Andrew Carnegie and Herman Hollerith. ASA, with a membership of 18,500 members, is a professional association of statisticians, quantitative scientists and users of statistics. ASA members serve in government, industry and academia applying statistics in the medical, biological, physical, economic and social sciences.

PRESENTATIONS

Kenneth A. Dodge, professor of psychology in the College of Arts and Science and Peabody College, professor of psychiatry, senior fellow for the Institute for Public Policy Studies and director of the Institute on Development and Psychopathology at the John F. Kennedy Center, presented an invited address on "How Chronic Conduct Problems Develop" at the Golden Anniversary Symposium on developmental psychopathology at the American Psychological Association's Aug. 18 annual meeting.

Richard E. Speece, Centennial Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, gave one of the two plenary speeches at the Eighth International Conference on Anaerobic Digestion held in Sendai, Japan, in June. The title of his presentation was "The Role of Process Configuration in the Performance of Anaerobic Systems."

APPOINTMENTS

Ephrahim Garcia, associate professor of mechanical engineering, has been appointed by the University of Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences to serve a two-year term on the Dean's Advisory Council. The council assists the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences in its goal to achieve preeminence in the areas of education, research and service.

Council members hold leadership positions in industry and professions and are selected for their accomplishments and potential. The council provides support and advice to the dean about industrial relations, long-term planning and strategy, development, education and professional identity, placement, curriculum, student organizations, classroom enrichment and new programs.
