In 1962, six students launched a program called Vucept to aid incoming freshmen in the orientation process. Completely student run, the original Vucept Board of Governors spent the summer of 1962 writing a training manual called The Book, and training the first staff of 75 Vuceptors. On Sept. 10, 1962, these men finished their final night of preparations for move-in the following morning. When the freshmen arrived, every new student was tended to by an upperclassman. The Board of Governors stated the organization's purpose is to deliver information "which we consider beneficial, and in many cases essential, for a freshman to become a productive member of the University community."
