Signs of the TimesAmSouth, Ben & Jerry's, Loews turn in banner performances to win inaugural 'Show Your Gold' contest
by Paula Sneed In an era defined by high-tech electronic communication, area retailers revised an age-old way to welcome Vanderbilt's 10,500 students back to campus this year: signs and banners. About two dozen merchants participated in the inaugural "Show Your Gold" banner contest sponsored by the University by posting signs in their storefronts or on their building exteriors welcoming students -- and potential new customers -- back to campus. West End hotel Loews Vanderbilt Plaza, ice creamery Ben & Jerry's and AmSouth Bank were each recognized Sept. 9 for their award-winning signs. Chancellor Gordon Gee chose the contest winners based on their creativity. An entourage that included Gee, Vice Chancellor for Public Affairs Michael J. Schoenfeld, and representatives from the Vanderbilt Cheerleading squad delivered the prizes to the winners Sept. 9. "Our students truly felt welcomed," said Gee. The prize pack awarded to each of the winners included a Vanderbilt gift basket complete with T-shirts and University merchandise, as well as a $500 check. AmSouth Bank chose to donate their prize to the Vanderbilt Women's Club scholarship. Gee said the contest was created due to the desire of area merchants "to both welcome students and promote school pride."
