The College of Arts and Science assistant registrar was awarded the 1995 Commodore Award as part of the Campus Service Recognition ceremony held Oct. 3 in Langford Auditorium.

Brenda Jordan, who came to Vanderbilt in 1973 as a clerk II in the College of Arts and Science and is now serving as acting registrar, received a $500 check and a silver trophy for being the Vanderbilt University employee who exemplifies dedication, professionalism and compassion in the workplace.

"She has remained in the same department for the past 22 years - although not in the same position," College of Arts and Science Dean Madeleine Goodman said during her award presentation remarks. "Her skills and talents were soon recognized, and she has achieved three promotions in reaching her current position. Throughout her years at Vanderbilt she has provided a consistent level of excellence in her service to the university and its customers."

Jordan's "customers" are typically students with seemingly insurmountable problems whom she often counsels and consoles, Goodman said.

"Always, she is ready to provide patient and compassionate assistance," Goodman explained. "As one co-worker remarked, 'She is always concerned about anything pertaining to students; she wants to make sure that everything works to their advantage.'"

Jordan's dedication and supportive attitude are also reflected in her interaction with co-workers, Goodman noted. She readily answers co-workers' questions and lends support. In addition, Jordan often looks for "innovations." She was the first person to advocate personal computers in the registrar's office, for example.

Prior to receiving her award, a videotape of Jordan at work was shown. Jordan said she knew she was finalist for the award when she was videotaped Sept. 28.

"You wouldn't believe the reaction of people (to the award)," Jordan said on Wednesday. "It's almost as exciting for them as it is for me. It's really wonderful. You can't hardly express it."

Any person holding a regular full-time staff position below the level of director or department head was eligible for Commodore Award nomination. The Commodore Award is specifically intended to recognize individual contributions. Nominations for this year's award were taken through Aug. 25.
