"Just say no." "Don't drink and drive." "Friends
don't let friends drive drunk."
These phrases ring in the ears of children from
the time they enter elementary school, yet alcohol misuse and
abuse is often a problem when students go away to college. Vanderbilt's
Office of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention works to
educate students about the effects of drug use and abuse, and
throughout the month of October, nationally known as Collegiate
Alcohol Awareness Month, the office will be sponsoring many
programs to raise alcohol awareness on campus.
Jeanine Atkinson, director for alcohol, tobacco
and other drug prevention (ATODP), which works through the Dean
of Students Office, joined Vanderbilt in August after serving
as a substance abuse specialist at Duke University for nearly
10 years.
