University sponsors Alcohol Awareness initiatives

"Just say no." "Don't drink and drive." "Friends don't let friends drive drunk."

These phrases ring in the ears of children from the time they enter elementary school, yet alcohol misuse and abuse is often a problem when students go away to college. Vanderbilt's Office of Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Prevention works to educate students about the effects of drug use and abuse, and throughout the month of October, nationally known as Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Month, the office will be sponsoring many programs to raise alcohol awareness on campus.

Jeanine Atkinson, director for alcohol, tobacco and other drug prevention (ATODP), which works through the Dean of Students Office, joined Vanderbilt in August after serving as a substance abuse specialist at Duke University for nearly 10 years.

 

 

Owen climbs to No. 22 in 'BusinessWeek' rankings

Vanderbilt University's Owen Graduate School of Management is ranked No. 22 nationally in the business school rankings by BusinessWeek magazine, which are released in the current issue of the magazine.

The BusinessWeek rankings are based on surveys of 247 corporate recruiters and 10,039 students at 82 business schools worldwide. The magazine publishes its rankings every two years. The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School finished No. 1, a spot it has maintained since 1994.

Fund raising tops $94M in FY'00

Despite coming off a record-setting year for fund raising, Vanderbilt officials are reporting exceptional results from efforts that yielded $94.6 million in fiscal year 2000. Fiscal year 1999 generated $194 million.

"Fiscal year 1999 was extremely unusual because of the generosity of the Ingrams and of Monroe Carell," said Beverly Bond, vice chancellor for alumni and development. In 1999, Carell, president and CEO of Central Parking, Inc. made a lead gift to the Children's Hospital and there was "enormous generosity" from the Ingram family.
