IN BRIEF
Campus modem pool upgraded
As described earlier in the Vanderbilt Register, ACIS has recently upgraded the campus modem pool with newer technology, which it expects to replace all previous ways to dial-in to the campus network. The 240 modems are organized into a half-hour queue ( accessed by dialing 343-9489) and a four-hour queue (accessed by dialing 343-9491). In order to best balance the load on these queues and to give individuals information regarding when it might be best to dial into a pool, ACIS has now developed a tool that graphically shows average and peak usage of each pool over each hour of the day for the past week. While past usage can't totally predict current conditions, if someone checked usage patterns occasionally, they would see times where the pools are underutilized. The usage tool is available on the campus World Wide Web off of the VUaccess homepage,
http://www.vanderbilt.edu/vuaccess/. The tools for updating dial-in software to access the newer technology modems are also available on the VUaccess home page.

Gray's `It's a Slippery Slope' Oct. 25
Monologuist Spalding Gray will perform "It's a Slippery Slope" at 8 p.m. in Vanderbilt's Langford Auditorium Saturday, Oct. 25, as part of Great Performances.
Gray's funny monologues, usually delivered while sitting at a desk with nothing but a glass of water and a notebook, have given him the epithet "new wave Mark Twain."
Gray's newest monologue focuses on learning how to do something late in life, about the search for a non-ironic positive inner voice which Spalding calls his "inner cheerleader." Gray has created a series of 14 monologues which have been performed throughout the United States, Europe and Australia. His film credits also include Roland Joffe's "The Killing Fields," David Byrne's "True Stories," Ron Howard's "The Paper" and John Boorman's "Beyond Rangoon."
Tickets are $24, $22, $20; $12 for students and children; $12 for Vanderbilt faculty and staff; $6 for Vanderbilt students. Discounts are available for groups of 10 or more and children and students through college age. All tickets are available through TicketMaster at 255-9600.
