| Research support competition open The University Research Council is pleased to announce the annual competition
for research support for tenured and tenure-track faculty. The deadline for submitting
proposals is January 12, 1998. Guidelines are available from the Graduate School, 411
Kirkland Hall.
Women needed for activity study
The Women's Physical Activity Study conducted by Mary A. Nies,
associate professor of nursing, is seeking volunteers. The project is funded by the
National Institute of Nursing Research, one of the National Institutes of Health.
Women should be healthy, between the ages of 30 and 60, and
physically inactive at the start of the study. They also need to have a working telephone
at home, be willing to receive phone calls at home and be available for at least one year.
All eligible women will receive a free fitness examination three
times over the course of a year. They will also complete several questionnaires regarding
their mood and level of physical activity. For taking part in these assessments,
participants can earn up to a total of $30. Some women will be asked to come to
Vanderbilt's Clinical Research Center for additional measurements. Those selected can earn
up to $70 more.

Former Ambassador to speak Dec. 1
James Laney, former U.S. ambassador to Korea, will be the guest
speaker at a meeting of the Vanderbilt Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa Dec. 2. The meeting,
slated for 4:10 p.m. in Room 103 of Wilson Hall. is open to everyone. The title of Laney's
speech is "Can We Still Speak of the Idea of a University?" Laney served as
ambassador to Korea from 1993 until February 1997. He previously spent 16 years as
president of Emory University, was a professor of ethics in the Vanderbilt Divinity School
(1966-69) and taught at Harvard University. Laney, who is a member of the Council on
Foreign Relations, will also speak to at the Divinity School Leadership Dinner Dec. 1.
Orchestra in concert Nov. 20 at MBA
Vanderbilt University's Blair School of Music announces a concert by
the Vanderbilt Orchestra Thursday, Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Paschall Theater on the campus
of Montgomery Bell Academy, 4001 Harding Rd. The concert is free and open to the public.
The program will include Rossini's "William Tell
Overture," conducted by Blair music major Joe Lee, Mozart's "Symphony No.
35" and Elgar's "Enigma Variations," led by Robin Fountain, conductor of
the Vanderbilt Orchestra.

Register takes holiday break
The Vanderbilt Register will not be published Monday, Nov. 24, due
to the Thanksgiving holiday. The Vanderbilt Register will resume publishing Monday, Dec.
1. The last issue of the fall semester will be published Monday, Dec. 8. Weekly publishing
will resume Jan. 12, 1998. Deadline for submission of items, such as Calendar, InBrief,
Faculty and Staff Notes and Bulletin Board items, is 10 days prior to publication date.

Bookstore holiday sale Dec. 8-10
Customers can save 10 percent during the sixth annual customer
appreciation holiday sale at the Rand Hall Bookstore Monday, Dec. 8, through Wednesday,
Dec. 10. Santa is scheduled to visit the Bookstore Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 11 to noon.
Free Polaroid pictures will be taken. The 10 percent off is in addition to the 10 percent
discount already offered to Vanderbilt faculty and staff.
Class rings, New York Times bestsellers, textbooks, Carmike movie
passes and other special event tickets are not included in the sale.
Transportation focus of Forum
The Dec. 18 Nashville Forum will feature guest speaker Jeff Rader,
manager of transportation programs for the Atlanta Chamber. Rader will use Atlanta as a
case study to illustrate the various ways a community moves its people and goods and the
importance of business being involved in the transportation solution. The event is hosted
by Vanderbilt University and the Nashville Area Chamber of Commerce. For more information,
