Vanderbilt summer camps keep children busy

With school winding down and summer fast approaching, parents looking for constructive ways to keep children busy might want to consider Vanderbilt University's athletic and recreation camps.

There are separate camps for boys' and girls' basketball and soccer. The Vanderbilt Football Camp and the Vanderbilt Baseball School are for boys. Boys and girls learn together at the Vanderbilt Tennis Camp. There is also a runners camp, open to both boys and girls, which is designed for long distance, middle distance and cross country runners. Vanderbilt University Campus Recreation also sponsors a variety of youth programs centered around the Student Recreation Center. All camps will be held on the Vanderbilt campus.

Listed below are the camp dates, prices and phone numbers to contact for application forms or additional information.

Football: A junior camp ($150) for boys age 8 through the eighth grade is scheduled for June 16-18. A senior camp ($300 boarding, $170 commuting) is slated for June 22-25 for ninth-graders through rising high school seniors. For more information, call 322-3565.

Boys' basketball: Day camps ($175) are scheduled June 9-13, June 23-27 and July 28-Aug. 1 for boys who have completed grades 3-12. A junior day camp ($100) is scheduled for July 14-16 and is open to boys who have completed kindergarten through the third grade. A shooting/offensive skills camp ($175 boarding, $150 commuting) is scheduled for June 27-29. Children of Vanderbilt faculty and staff are entitled to a 10 percent discount. Girls' basketball: Day camps ($170) are scheduled for June 16-20 and July 7-11 for girls in grades 4-12. A junior camp ($100) is scheduled for June 3-5 and is available for girls in kindergarten through the third grade. An overnight camp ($300 resident, $200 commuting) is scheduled for July 20-24 and is geared for girls 10-17. A position camp ($175) is reserved for girls who have completed at least one year of varsity competition. For more information, call 343-8482.

Boys' soccer: Day camps ($140) are scheduled for June 16-20 for ages 5-9 and June 23-27 for ages 10-16. A specialty/position camp ($110) is scheduled for July 7-11 and is available for age 12 and up. An advanced camp ($350 resident, $280 commuting) is scheduled for July 13-18 for ages 12 and up. A special father-son camp ($100 per duo) is available July 18-19. Girls' soccer: A day camp ($140) is scheduled for June 9-13 for players age 5-17. A residential camp ($390 resident, $300 commuting) is scheduled for July 26-30 for players age 12-18. For more information, call 343-8095.

Tennis: Day camps ($235) are offered June 2-6, June 9-13, June 16-20, June 23-27, July 7-11 and July 14-18. The camp is open to children ages 7-17. For more information, call 343-8940.

Baseball: Full day camps ($190) are scheduled June 23-27 and July 7-11 for players age 7-15. A hitting and defense camp ($90) is scheduled in the mornings July 14-17 for boys 7-18. A pitching and catching camp ($90) is scheduled for the afternoons July 14-17 for players age 7-18. A pitching and hitting camp ($80) is scheduled for June 16-18 from 9 a.m. to noon. Runner camp: The camp ($350 resident, $275 commuter) is scheduled for July 30-Aug. 4. The camp is limited to 25 participants. For more information, call 343-8558.

Campus Recreation youth programs: CampRec ($90) is a day camp for children 6 to 12 sponsored by Vanderbilt University Campus Recreation. Each camp session runs one week. Sessions are slated for June 9-13, June 16-20, June 23-27, July 30-July 3, July 7-11, July 14-18, July 21-25, July 28-Aug. 1 and Aug. 4-8. Campus Recreation also sponsors an Instructional Swim Program ($50) for children 6 months to age 12. There is also a Parent and Tot swimming program ($25 per child). The two-week instructional swimming sessions for children are June 16-27 and July 21-Aug. 1. The one-week Parent and Tot sessions are June 16-20 and July 21-25.

Campus Recreation also offers a Friday Night Overnight ($25) July 11 and Aug 8. Youngsters age 9-12 can "sleep over" at the Student Recreation Center during Friday Night Overnight. There is also a free Kids Climb program for CampRec participants and Student Recreation Center members under the age of 14. The schedule for Kids Climb will be announced at a later date.
