Foster to coach USA Women's World University Games
Women's basketball coach Jim Foster has been named head coach of the 1997
USA Women's World University Games Team. Selected as assistants were University
of North Carolina at Charlotte coach Ed Baldwin and Kansas State University's
Deb Patterson, who worked with Foster at Vanderbilt from 1993 to 1996 as
an assistant coach.
"It's always an honor to be asked to coach a team which is going to
represent your country," said Foster. The year of the trials "has
always been the most interesting year for the U.S. because the nucleus of
the Olympic team does not usually play and this will truly test the depth
of our quality players."
USA Women's Team Trials will be held Aug. 1-4 in Colorado Springs, Colo.,
to select the 12-member World University Games and Jones Cup squads. U.S.
World University Games Teams have earned three golds, five silvers and one
bronze medal, and compiled an overall record of 58-12 in 10 competitions.
Last capturing the gold in 1991, the United States took home the silver
medal at the 1995 World University Games.
USA head coach for the 1993 USA Junior World Championship and 1991 junior
national teams, Foster has served as an assistant coach to numerous top
U.S. teams, including the 1992 bronze medal- winning USA Olympic Team and
the 1990 World Championship and Goodwill Games teams that captured gold
medals.
