Barr to receive 10th honorary degree

James Barr, Vanderbilt Divinity School's internationally noted Distinguished Professor of Hebrew Bible, will receive his 10th honorary doctorate and deliver three important lectures this spring.

The University of Helsinki, Finland, will present Barr an honorary doctorate of theology May 23. The same day the university will celebrate the 500th anniversary of the birth of Philip Melanchthon and the 50th anniversary of the Lutheran World Federation. Melanchthon, born in 1497, was the most important person in establishing Lutheranism other than Martin Luther.

Barr presented a paper titled "Prescientific Chronology: The Bible and the Origin of the World" at the American Philosophical Society held the first weekend in May.

He will also give the Hensley Hinson Lectures in Oxford later in May and will go on to lecture at the University of Amsterdam on the way to receive his honorary degree and to lecture at the University of Helsinki.

Barr also holds honorary degrees from Manchester University (England), Knox College (Canada), Dubuque University (United States), St. Andrews and Edinburgh universities (Scotland), the University of South Africa, the Faculte de Theologie Protestante (Paris), Victoria University (Canada), and the University of Oslo (Norway).
