Briefly SpeakingCFT, library sponsor faculty conference The Center for Teaching and the University Library will sponsor a faculty teaching conference May 8-10. Nancy Van Note Chism will deliver the keynote lecture, part of the Chancellor's Lecture Series on Great Teaching, May 8 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Room 222, Owen Graduate School of Management. She will be speaking on "Making Teaching Community Property: Peer Review of Teaching in the Research University." A reception will follow. Chism, the associate vice chancellor for professional development and associate dean of the faculties at Indiana University-Purdue University, Indianapolis, is author of Peer Review of Teaching: A Sourcebook. In addition to the keynote, a series of workshops and panel discussions will be held during the three-day conference on topics ranging from supervising teaching assistants to leading discussions to a variety of technology-related issues. A complete schedule with descriptions of the sessions is available on the Center for Teaching Web site at www.vanderbilt.edu/cft. Space is limited in each session; please register no later than May 1. Macdonald, Miller earn SEC honors Vanderbilt women's tennis coach Geoff Macdonald was named the SEC's Coach of the Year April 20 in a vote by his peers. It is Macdonald's second such honor and his first while coaching at Vanderbilt. Macdonald is the only coach ever to be named women's tennis Coach of the Year in both the Southeastern Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference. He won the honor at LSU in 1991 and also at Duke in 1992. Vanderbilt women's tennis sophomore Jenny Miller, of Savannah, Ga., was named to the All-SEC second team in a vote from the league's coaches.

Students receive ethics awards Paul J. Ford, a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Philosophy, has been awarded the 2000 Senator C. Hieronymus Award in Medical Humanities for his essay "Adam's Rib and Eve's Kidney: Transgressing Borders Through Shared Body Parts." The Senator C. Hieronymus Award is presented annually by the Center for Clinical and Research Ethics to a currently enrolled graduate or professional student at Vanderbilt University for the outstanding written essay on an appropriate topic in medical humanities. A second award, the Dixon N. Burns Award in Medical Ethics, was given by the Center for Clinical and Research Ethics to Sarah McAchran, fourth-year medical student, for her essay, "From Stoic Hero to Political Activist: The Metaphorical Transformation of the Breast Cancer Experience in America." Both award recipients received a plaque and cash prize at a reception in their honor held on April 10 at the Center for Clinical and Research Ethics.
Talk on retirement scheduled Melanie Dean, with Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, will speak May 5 at noon on "Transition to Retirement." Dean will address how to identify retirement options and how to evaluate them to make sure they are appropriate. The talk will be held at the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center. Summer parking changes Summer modifications to permit parking will begin April 25 and will be fully implemented May 12 following commencement. Beginning Tuesday, April 25, at 2:30 p.m., vehicles with valid, daytime, University commuter permits (Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, LA and VTS) may park in any zone (1, 2 or 3). Beginning Friday, May 12, at 2:30 p.m., vehicles with resident student permits (E, F, G and J) may park in F, J or zone lots. Vehicles with valid, daytime, University commuter permits (Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, LA and VTS) may be parked in F lots. Lot 27 (between the Recreation Center and the Tennis Center) will be available to vehicles with valid, daytime, University permits (Zones 1, 2, 3, 4, F, G, J, LA and VTS) and 12-month reserved-space permits (BK, OG, TG, WP). The two-hour limit spaces will be enforced. The modifications will be in effect until 7 a.m., Monday, Aug. 21. All other University parking regulations will be in force. Questions should be directed to the Office of Traffic and Parking at 322-2554.
