PAPERS & PRESENTATIONS
Jacob Adams, associate professor of education and public policy, presented "A Decade of School Reform in Kentucky" and "State Accountability Mandates and Their Effects on Local School Leadership: Concept and Demands" at the American Educational Research Association's annual meeting, held April 23-29 in New Orleans. He also presented "Making Money Matter" with James Guthrie, professor of policy and education. Cynthia Cyrus, assistant professor of musicology, gave a preconcert lecture Feb. 11 for the Folger Consort in Washington, D.C., on the subject of Machaut and Remede de Fortune. She will also present her paper "Literacy, Orality and Something In-Between" at the International Medieval Congress in May in Kalamazoo, Mich.
Rachelle Feiler, assistant professor of early childhood education, has had her article "Teachers leading teachers" published in the April 2000 issue of Educational Leadership. Co-authors were Margaret Heritage and Ronald Gallimore, both of the University of California, Los Angeles.
Melanie Lowe, assistant professor of music history and literature, read "Colliding Feminisms: Britney Spears, 'Tweens' and the Politics of Reception" at Smith College in February. Kay McClain, assistant professor of mathematics education, presented "Supporting Students' Mathematical Development" at the AERA annual meeting. She also presented "Supporting Middle-School Students' Ability to Reason Multiplicatively about Data" and "Supporting Middle-School Students' Ability to Develop Data-Based Arguments" with Paul Cobb, professor of mathematics education. McClain also presented "Implementation Research Supporting the Development of Teacher Professional Communities and Improved Student Learning" with Marcy Singer Gabella, assistant professor of education. McClain, Gabella and Cobb presented "Changing the Culture of Classrooms."
Michael McDonald, assistant professor of political science, has had his article "A New Look at Ticket Splitting: The Comparative Midpoints Model" published in the February 2000 issue of Journal of Politics. Co-authors were Bernard Grofman, William Koetzel and Thomas Brunell.
Sharon Shields, professor of the practice of education and health promotion, presented "Bridging the Gap: Urban and Native American Health Initiatives" at the AERA annual meeting with Vanderbilt graduate student Brad Gray and Elizabeth Gilbert, of the University of New Mexico-Gallup.
