Parents Weekend to feature 'Accolade Dance'

With a theme of "Planet Vanderbilt," organizers have designed Parents Weekend 2002 to showcase the broad variety of opportunities and experiences available to members of the Vanderbilt world. During Parents Weekend March 22-24, students and their families will have the opportunity to meet popular faculty members, attend performing arts events, see the Nashville sights, visit residence halls and hit the dance floor for a good cause.

The weekend kicks off Friday, March 22, when parents check in and have the option to take one of two guided tours of Nashville. Saturday morning will feature a Parents Association Breakfast, followed by remarks from Chancellor Gordon Gee. Saturday afternoon events include the popular Faculty Lecture Series and student organization receptions and ceremonies. Performances by Original Cast, the Concert Choir, Tonguencheek and Athenian Sing are scheduled throughout the weekend.

The most significant program change this year was to replace the traditional "Chancellor's Reception" on Friday with the "Chancellor's Accolade Dance" on Saturday night. This semiformal dance raises funds in support of the Chancellor's Minority Scholarship, and has historically been held during Homecoming. The festivities were moved to Parents Weekend to give students' families the opportunity to participate in Vanderbilt's largest indoor social event. Tickets are on sale at the Sarratt Box Office.

Parents Weekend is sponsored by the new Division of Student Life. For more information about these events, contact event chairs Kelli Deel at 479-4885 or Michelle Rosen at 322-6400. For information about Accolade, contact Sean Smithey at 322-3963.
