In its June 25, 1982, issue, the Vanderbilt Register announced that Stanley Cohen,then-professor of biochemistry at the School of Medicine, was the recipient of the 1982 General Motors Cancer Research Foundation's Alfred P. Sloan Jr. Prize. The award, given for the most outstanding contribution in basic science to cancer, consisted of a gold medal and $100,000. Cohen received the award for his work with Epidermal Growth Factor. Four years later, Cohen won the Nobel Prize in Physiology for his research. Cohen is now the Distinguished Professor of Biochemistry and the American Cancer Society Research Professor of Biochemistry at Vanderbilt.
